Surrey bakery distributes thousands of cakes for charity during Ramadan<\/p>\n

A Surrey bakery recently distributed thousands of cakes across Canada in support of Islamic Relief Canada\u2019s orphan fund, which supports over 26,000 children globally.<\/p>\n
Raveena Oberoi, owner and operator of Just Cakes Bakeshop, which provides the cakes, has been participating in the charity\u2019s Baked with Purpose campaign, which takes place annually during the holy month of Ramadan, for the past two years.<\/p>\n
Oberoi is not a Muslim but is inspired by the Muslim community and the importance they place on caring for their community, whether it\u2019s their next-door neighbour or a child across the world, especially during Ramadan.<\/p>\n
Ramadan started this year on Feb. 17, after the sighting of the crescent moon, and ends on the evening of March 18. Muslims fast during Ramadan from sunup to sundown and typically break the fast each evening with dates and water, followed by a meal called \u201ciftar.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c(Ramadan) teaches you how it feels to not have something, whether it be food or drink,\u201d Oberoi said. \u201cSo you do kind of grow this empathy and compassion, and I think that\u2019s super, super beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re able to give generously and compassionately. So I really think that\u2019s a beautiful lesson, especially in a time when the world is kind of crappy right now; it\u2019s a good reminder of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Oberoi had been supporting Islamic Relief Canada locally for several years, so when Islamic Relief Canada contacted her a couple of years ago about getting involved in a national campaign, she was inspired by the Muslim community to give back.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe campaign delivers life-saving aid to tackle long-term solutions to poverty, specifically for the orphan fund campaign,\u201d Oberoi said. <\/p>\n
The non-profit is one of the largest Muslim charities in Canada and operates in over 40 countries.<\/p>\n
A box of 4 Halal Just Cakes cake jars was $50 each and included two double-chocolate, red velvet, and birthday-cake jars from Just Cakes Bakery. Orders had to be in by Feb. 27.<\/p>\n
On March 7 & 8, Oberoi and her staff distributed 650 boxes full of Halal cake jars, 52 of which were delivered locally and the rest were sent across the country.<\/p>\n
