Dana Claxton, the acclaimed artist behind The Bead at UrbanScreen for a month, will talk about the video projection on Saturday, March 21 at Surrey Art Gallery.<\/p>\n
The afternoon event at the Bear Creek Park gallery (2 to 4 p.m., free admission) will explore Claxton\u2019s digital art, said to honour beadwork \u201cas a living cultural practice, highlighting its role in expressing identity, lineage and Lakota traditions through handcrafted moccasins of Grace Peigan.\u201d<\/p>\n
The exhibition can be viewed 30 minutes after sunset until midnight on the library wall at Surrey Civic Plaza, closing April 18.<\/p>\n
Claxton\u2019s work in film, video, photography, single\/multi-channel video installation and performance art is shown around the <\/a>world<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Bead, says SAG associate curator Suvi Bains, \u201cis a powerful reminder of the vitality of Indigenous cultures on Turtle Island and the ways artistic traditions carry identity, knowledge and history forward. Presenting this work at UrbanScreen creates space for those stories to be seen and celebrated in the public realm.\u201d<\/p>\n
