CHASING SPEED: 54-hole co-leader Lee Westwood has found his form quickly despite missing the first two tournaments of the 2026 season after suffering a tendon injury in his left wrist. He returned last week at Hong Kong and finished tied for 18th. \u201cI was in my simulator at\u00a0home, and I forgot I was nearly 53, thinking I was 23, and tried to get up to 180 mile-an-hour ball speed and was off the floor hitting it, and just on my follow-through I felt something kind of click or pop,\u201d Westwood explained.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Sunday, he\u2019ll\u00a0play with two-time major\u00a0winner\u00a0Bryson DeChambeau and 7-time LIV Golf winner Joaquin Niemann. DeChambeau is 32 years old; Niemann is\u00a027.<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ve always been fiercely competitive,\u201d Westwood said. \u201cI find a competition in anything I’m\u00a0doing, and now\u00a0I’m\u00a0at an age where\u00a0it’s about getting in there and showing the younger lads that I can still do it and shaking it up a bit. They could be under pressure a bit tomorrow with an old man like me staring them down, or they might just relax and play well. You never know.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Niemann and Westwood will be in the same group for just the second time at a LIV Golf tournament. Their only previous\u00a0group came in the final round in\u00a0Andaluc\u00eda in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously,\u00a0he’s\u00a0a lot older than me. He has a lot of experience,\u201d Niemann said. \u201cHe’s an unbelievable golfer, has\u00a0a great career, and\u00a0he’s\u00a0still a lot to impress everybody. I\u00a0haven’t\u00a0played much with him, so\u00a0I’m\u00a0looking forward to spending time with him tomorrow, playing a round of golf.\u00a0It’s\u00a0nice to see him perform. He\u00a0kind of struggled\u00a0a little bit last year. I feel like he was pretty close to relegation last year, and him being able to come back and work hard as he did, and for the age that he has, for how many years he’s been working hard and trying to figure it out \u2013I really respect that and respect his game because of that.\u00a0It’ll be good to play with him and learn from him as well tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Although Sunday will be the first time Westwood has been in the final group in the final round of a LIV Golf tournament, he has plenty of experience in final-round battles during a career in which he\u2019s won in four different decades.<\/p>\n
Asked what lessons he\u2019s learned, Westwood replied: \u201cJust that anything can happen. We\u202fdon’t\u202fhave much control over external things. I could play great tomorrow. I could play poorly. I could play great and not shoot\u202fa very good\u202fscore. I could play poorly and shoot a great score. You\u202fdon’t\u202fknow\u202fwhat’s\u202fgoing to happen. Really just controlling the controllables and sticking to my process and what\u202fI’ve\u202fdone over the first three days and not get carried away with the position\u202fI’m\u202fin or trying to do too much, especially around this golf course.
