{"id":535783,"date":"2026-03-14T11:26:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T11:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/535783\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T11:26:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T11:26:12","slug":"canadiens-acquire-hunter-shepard-forward-jake-chiasson-from-sens-for-riley-kidney-in-ahl-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/535783\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadiens acquire Hunter Shepard, forward Jake Chiasson from Sens for Riley Kidney in AHL deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">BROSSARD \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/montreal-canadiens\/8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/montreal-canadiens\/8\" target=\"_blank\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> have signed defenceman Luke Mittelstadt to a two-year, entry-level contract, the NHL club announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mittelstadt also signed a one-year, one-way American Hockey League contract and will join the Canadiens\u2019 affiliate, the Laval Rocket, for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 23-year-old had 21 points (two goals, 19 assists) in 36 games for the University of Minnesota Gophers in the NCAA this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His goals, assists and points led all Gophers defencemen, in addition to being career highs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mittelstadt, one of three players to serve as team captain this season, concluded his NCAA career with 80 points (11 goals, 69 assists) in 152 games with the Gophers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Eden Prairie, Minn., native selected by Montreal in the seventh round (197th overall) of the 2023 NHL draft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Later Friday, the Canadiens traded forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/riley-kidney\/8482828\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/riley-kidney\/8482828\" target=\"_blank\">Riley Kidney<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/team-page\/ottawa-senators\/9\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> in exchange for goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/hunter-shepard\/8482411\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/hunter-shepard\/8482411\" target=\"_blank\">Hunter Shepard<\/a> and forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jake-chiasson\/8482706\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/player\/jake-chiasson\/8482706\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Chiasson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Kidney, a second-round draft pick in 2021, has 11 goals and 22 assists in 46 games with the ECHL\u2019s Trois-Rivi\u00e8res Lions this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Shepard, 30, has a 6-7-2 record in 15 AHL games this season.
