Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Original article below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/best-whatsapp-features-from-the-last-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a> stops offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/end-to-end-encryption-explainer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">end-to-end encryption<\/a> (E2EE)? That&#8217;s not happening, but a different Meta-owned company, which has formerly offered E2EE on direct messages (DMs), is pulling the plug on message privacy.<\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"440\" height=\"364\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A generic security lock showing digital encryption with a blue background\" data-img-url=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/encryption-generic.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/encryption-generic.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                    Related<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/end-to-end-encryption-explainer\/\" title=\"What is end-to-end encryption?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\tWhat is end-to-end encryption?<br \/>\n\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"display-card-excerpt\">How can an app send messages that only you can decode?<\/p>\n<p>Soon after facing privacy concerns with its Meta AI smart glasses, the conglomerate is giving birth to new privacy concerns by <a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/491565145294150\/?helpref=uf_share\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announcing the end of Instagram&#8217;s E2EE for DMs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The development was highlighted in an Instagram Help Center update, as pointed out by <a href=\"https:\/\/piunikaweb.com\/2026\/03\/13\/instagram-to-stop-supporting-end-to-end-encrypted-dms-after-may-8\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">PiunikaWeb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>                                        If you have chats that are impacted by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages you may want to keep.<\/p>\n<p>                                        If you&#8217;re on an older version of Instagram, you may also need to update the app before you can download your affected chats.<\/p>\n<p>                        The trade-off<\/p>\n<p>The company offered no reason behind the big change. It is also unclear if Instagram might be shifting to a different kind of message encryption tech.<\/p>\n<p>Removing E2EE means Meta will be able to access your private messages. The change could be tied to mounting global pressure and could be a way for Meta to scan for illegal material, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which seems to be a big problem on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>By removing encryption, the tech giant can:<\/p>\n<p>                                        Proactively scan messages to identify and flag illegal material.<\/p>\n<p>                                        Provide messages to legal authorities when prompted.<\/p>\n<p>                                        Make it easier to take action on user reports.<\/p>\n<p>Although its reasoning might be moral, the change is sure to make privacy advocates, and even everyday users, uneasy. The change could also trigger a mass exodus from Instagram DMs as users transition to more hardened alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>The change will kick in on May 8, 2026. Instagram suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/181231772500920\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">exporting your data<\/a>, including chat media and logs, before the big transition.
