{"id":537405,"date":"2026-03-15T05:49:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T05:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/537405\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T05:49:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T05:49:15","slug":"conservation-officers-say-goodbye-to-kilo-the-invasive-mussels-detector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/537405\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservation officers say &#8216;goodbye&#8217; to Kilo the invasive mussels detector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>B.C. conservation officers said goodbye to Kilo, the first search and detection dog in the province trained to detect invasive mussels, passing just one year after his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Referred to as one of BC Conservation Officer Service\u2019s \u201cmost well-known dogs,\u201d officers mourned the loss of the four-legged search and detection agent this week.<\/p>\n<p>Kilo served for eight years on the Invasive Mussel Defence Program working to prevent invasive mussels from entering B.C. waters.<\/p>\n<p>During his career, Kilo conducted more than 200 high-risk vessel inspections and detected more than two dozen positive mussel contaminations.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond invasive mussels, BCCOS says \u201cKilo\u2019s diverse skillset was also critical in other types of BCCOS work, including searching for and locating evidence, such as shell casings, firearms and wildlife for investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pooch was also fan favourite at public events like trade shows and presentations with partner agencies and municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Kilo retired from his role in February 2025, but remained with the COS family. Officers say he was \u201cspoiled rotten\u201d on his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>In a final \u201cRIP K9 Kilo\u201d farewell post, BCCOS writes: \u201cThank you for your service, Kilo.
