Seven were captured for breeding purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The latest discovery of the insect, scientifically known as Dryococelus australis, marks 25 years since the insect was first rediscovered on Ball&#8217;s Pyramid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The insects were once so common, they were used as bait by early settlers on Lord Howe until black rats colonised the island after a shipwreck in 1918.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After 15 years of rodent predation, the stick insect was believed extinct before it was rediscovered in 2001 on the remote outcrop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian Museum considers it &#8220;may be the rarest insect&#8221; and possibly also the &#8220;rarest invertebrate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While Melbourne Zoo&#8217;s phasmid specialist Rohan Cleave said they were &#8220;one of the most rare invertebrates known in the wild&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Estimates of the insect in the wild are difficult due to its remote habitat, however NSW Environment and Heritage lists its population as &#8220;fewer than 50 mature individuals in the wild&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in Melbourne Zoo uniform\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/caf731ef0ec71d1d42e39fa533b99549.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rohan Cleave says the Lord Howe Island stick insects are one of the most rare invertebrates known in the wild. (Supplied: Zoos Victoria)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re more important than I am, their future is much more important, as I want to see this species survive long into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since the Melbourne University program began with two insects in 2003, it has has bred 19 generations with genetic diversity limited to five wild-captured phasmids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So that&#8217;s been really tricky and that&#8217;s why any injection of new genetics is vitally important,&#8221; Mr Cleave said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is now an international captive breeding program, that is really well-known for what can be done with such a small founding population to start with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Melbourne Zoo&#8217;s captive breeding success with the rare phasmids attracted worldwide attention, including from British naturalist Sir David Attenborough, who visited the zoo&#8217;s breeding project in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"David Attenborough opens his mouth and appears to exclaim in surprise as he holds a black stick insect.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/a633eada760a1c06cac0dd54620d7c30.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In 2012, David Attenborough was impressed to hold a Lord Howe Island stick insect bred at Melbourne Zoo.
