So what is Ford doing to ensure and enhance that future? Why are unconscionable changes being made to the OSAP program to make it “sustainable” at the expense of solid education?

Meanwhile, he proposes to waste untold millions of dollars on his Mickey Mouse vanity projects. These include tunnelling under Highway 401 and filling in part of Lake Ontario for a new convention centre, and other nonsense such as grandstanding by pouring out bottles of Crown Royal.

As this unfolds, in the last year he has had the legislature in recess more weeks than it has been in session, Education Minister Paul Calandra interferes with (suspends) elected school board trustees, educational institutions and opportunities suffer, and our health system, highways and other critical infrastructure deteriorate because of underfunding.

Advertisement 3

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Article content

No wonder in the past two elections in Ontario I have not voted Conservative, and I will withhold that support as long as Ford maintains his foolish fantasies and underfunds key elements in this province.

MIKE ALAIN
OTTAWA

LONG-TERM DEAL NEEDED

If we, as a country, are to prosper going forward, a detailed financial obligation between the government and First Nations has to be put in place, along with agreements for future expansion for things like pipelines, mines or energy corridors.

No matter how much is given from the taxpayers, there always seems to be a bigger ask.

Work out a long term-deal, maybe 50 or 100 years, that sees all the money go into one big pot, with it left up to each First Nation to decide what its share is.

Advertisement 4

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

Article content

The idea that we have to fight every time to put a shovel in the ground is nonsensical in a resource-based economy.

WAYNE BOYCE
CARLETON PLACE

TIME STAMP

Once again, we were wailing and gnashing our teeth over the stress caused by a one-hour body clock change that occurs twice a year. Both my kids are first responders, and I myself was a shift worker for 15 years.

Instead of fussing over springing ahead, let’s give a thought to the thousands of shift workers, in multiple lines of work, who must change their body clocks 12 hours at a time — four to six times … per month.

MARVIN SANDOMIRSKY
OSHAWA, ONT.

LACK OF LEADERSHIP

Prime Minister Mark Carney is riding his high horse, buzzing around the world touting major trade deals. If he thinks China is going to cease interference in Canadian politics and India will forget the past debacle due to trade deals, he is sadly mistaken. His shaded responses to the U.S. and Israel war with Iran were poor, to say the least.

We are leaderless.

BILL SHOLDICE
MISSISSAUGA, ONT.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Your letters are welcome, at: OttSun.Oped@sunmedia.ca. Include your first and last name AND city/town.
