Kurt Russell<\/a> is looking back at his iconic near-proposal to longtime partner Goldie Hawn<\/a> at the 1989 Oscars<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Madison<\/a> star tells Entertainment Weekly that he and Hawn came up with their legendary bit \u2014\u00a0which saw Russell almost propose to the actress live on national television \u2014\u00a0while they were showering together while getting ready for the ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had the routine that we were given to do and it was terrible. So we said, \u2018Well, we got to do something else,\u2019\u201d Russell explains. \u201cWe were taking a shower together, getting ready to go to the Academy Awards and be in front of a billion and a half people, and I said, \u2018This [routine] is awful. We got to do something.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

So, they scrapped the original plan and started brainstorming. \u201cGoldie and I worked that routine out in the shower and we just didn’t tell anybody and we just went on,\u201d Russell recalls. \u201cHere came the prompters up with the stuff, and we didn’t bother looking at it. We just did our thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

While presenting the award for Best Directing at the event, Hawn began by telling Russell that they \u201cfit in completely to the theme of the show\u201d because \u201cwe\u2019re costars, we\u2019re compadres, we\u2019re companions, and we\u2019re a couple!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, there\u2019s only one thing we\u2019re not\u2026 married,\u201d Russell said. Hawn, in response, burst into a fit of nervous giggles before asking, \u201cIs that a proposal?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

A laughing Russell took a step back from the podium as the room filled with loud cheers and applause over their potential engagement.\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019re putting me on the spot! I guess now\u2019s a good a time as any to answer that,\u201d he began, before his attention was seemingly diverted backstage. \u201cOh, they want us to speed things up. Listen, we\u2019ll talk about it later tonight, okay?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

As Russell launched into a spiel about directing, Hawn appeared visibly stunned by the segue before laughing and telling him, \u201cWe will talk about that later.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

To this day, Russell still appears surprised by how many people genuinely believed that he was really going to pop the question onstage.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople thought it was real! That was the weird part.\u2026 I thought it was a testament to our abilities,\u201d he jokes. \u201cThere’s a tape that has the \u201950 Greatest Moments in Academy Award Presentations\u2019 or something, and it’s one of those.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

He continues, \u201cAnd it’s still looked at as something that was real. It was completely made up. Goldie and I worked it out in the shower 20 minutes before we left to go to the Academy Awards.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

There were, however, some people who knew that the couple were bluffing: their families. \u201cThey all knew we were just goofing,\u201d he says. \u201cI mean, if you look at it again, you can see that we\u2019re goofing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, he lightheartedly admits, \u201cWhen Goldie looks at the audience…it was a little too real, I guess.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

It might not be a proposal, but Russell and Hawn have plenty to celebrate when it comes to this year\u2019s Oscars. Hawn\u2019s daughter Kate Hudson<\/a>, whom Russell helped raise, is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in the Neil-Diamond-infused film, Song Sung Blue.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is Hudson\u2019s second nomination, having previously been in the running for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe\u2019s love letter to music journalism, Almost Famous.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
