I don\u2019t know where I am going to get it in the off months or the down months. I get really worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Anna, 30, has a master\u2019s degree and has lived in five countries, but wanted to settle down and get a permanent job with benefits when she got married a few years ago. She found one, at a news outlet, and worked there for two years before she was laid off during the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI spent a few months looking for a job and realized it wasn\u2019t working and I was wasting time,\u201d she said. \u201cI hear about people applying for hundreds of jobs a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/young-money\/article-winnipeg-aviation-paycheque-project\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Winnipeg aviation worker made $315,000 last year, but often works 12-hour shifts, eight days in row<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Now, she\u2019s a freelancer, an arrangement she loves because she can work anywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTravelling is probably one of the biggest pleasures of my life,\u201d says Anna, who lives in downtown Toronto. She grew up in South Asia and came to the suburbs of the Greater Toronto Area when she was 10 years old. \u201cI centre a lot of what I do around being able to move freely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But to make a decent income freelancing, she has to work a lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI am working all the time: in the plane, in the hotel lobby, at the wedding. If someone wants to talk to me [for work] while I am in the United Arab Emirates, I will wake up at 3 a.m. and take that call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Her mental health has taken a hit. She put her gym membership on hold last fall, since she struggles to prioritize exercise when she could be working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cLast year was so messy,\u201d says Anna, whose partner has a stable and high-earning job as an engineer. \u201cI had so many incredible career milestones, but my health fell completely off a cliff. I\u2019ve never given up on myself like that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She says she struggles to dedicate time to her well-being. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt has changed my brain chemistry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/article-rural-saskatchewan-dad-37-says-it-was-an-affordable-place-to-live-but\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rural Saskatchewan dad, 37, says it was an affordable place to live \u2018but that is changing\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Anna is Muslim, and her religion forbids paying or receiving interest payments. As a result, she keeps her cash in a chequing account instead of a savings account. One of several of her TFSAs is a halal account through Wealthsimple, invested in a mix of gold, cash and global factor equities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She also invests in physical gold, saying she has about $30,000 worth of gold jewelry, tablets and coins, much of it purchased in her travels around the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cSometimes I really freak out because I don\u2019t have a job. I don\u2019t have benefits. I don\u2019t have a steady income,\u201d says Anna. \u201cBut when I see a physical asset like gold I feel calmer. I feel a bit more stable, and I feel like it\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her typical monthly expenses:<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Investment and savings: $570<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$550 to TFSA. \u201cI sometimes will also add in random $1,000 here and there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$20 to RRSP. \u201cI just started doing this this month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Servicing debt: $0<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Household and transportation: $1,155<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$1,000 to rent. \u201cThe total is $2,400 and my husband takes care of the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 to transit<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$125 to Uber or taxis<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Food and drink: $240<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 to groceries. \u201cThe random things from Rabba if we run out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$55 at coffee shops<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 at restaurants. \u201cHusband takes care of this unless I\u2019m alone\/with my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$5 on alcohol. \u201cA budget wine for $10 to $15, maybe three to four times a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Miscellaneous: $692<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$300 on entertainment. \u201cWe do date nights and try to find activities: Ring-making, wine-tasting, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$67 on apps. \u201cSpotify, Otter, Zoom, WordPress, GoDaddy, Google storage, The Globe and Mail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 on clothing<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$39 on gym membership. \u201cI put my gym membership on pause until April in October last year; I paid $117 monthly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$35 on scrapbooking supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$33 on haircuts. \u201c$200 total, twice a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$60 on manicure<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$17 on dentist. \u201c$200 yearly for two cleanings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$20 on donations<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$75 on gifts<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$16 to accountant. \u201c$193 last year. I don\u2019t know how much I paid in taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Some details may be changed to protect the privacy of the person profiled.
