MONTREAL \u2013\u00a0Dignitaries and members of the Canadiens organization were on hand for the unveiling of a pair of plaques celebrating hockey history in the province on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The first plaque was made to mark the first organized\u00a0ice hockey game, which took place on March 3,\u00a01875,\u00a0in Montreal. The game involved members of the Victoria Skating Club, with two squads captained by\u00a0James G.\u202fA.\u202fCreighton and Charles\u202fE.\u202fTorrance, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Team Creighton won the game 2-1 in front of members of the public, who had been invited to\u00a0witness\u00a0the occasion,\u00a0less than two\u00a0blocks\u00a0away from what is now the\u00a0current-day\u00a0home of the Canadiens.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The second plaque honors the late former Canadiens captain, Maurice \u201cRocket\u201d Richard, who played 18 seasons for the Canadiens, winning eight Stanley Cups. His\u00a0544 career regular season goals and 82 career playoff tallies still stand as most all-time in franchise history. The Montreal native served as captain from\u00a0the\u00a01956-57\u00a0season\u00a0until his retirement in 1959-60\u00a0and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Richard was given the distinction of being named a historic figure by the province of Quebec in\u00a0May\u00a02025, to coincide with the 25th\u00a0anniversary of his passing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Attending the ceremony were Mathieu Lacombe, Minister of Culture and Communications, Isabelle Charest,\u00a0Sports Minister,\u00a0France Margaret Belanger, President, Sports and Entertainment for Groupe CH, Andr\u00e9anne Moreau, City Councillor, Christine Black, Borough Mayor and Executive Committee Vice-Chair, as well as members of the Richard family.<\/p>\n
