Kingston\u2019s win streak stretched to five games, the last three coming in the four nights of the final extended road trip of the regular season. In the first four games of that stretch, the contests were tight and often tense, but drama was at a bare minimum Sunday.<\/p>\n

With the win in Brampton, the Frontenacs moved three points clear of the Niagara IceDogs for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference entering the last week of the regular season. On Thursday at the Meridian Centre in St Catharines, Kingston jumped Niagara in the standings with a dramatic 2-1 victory<\/a>. While Kingston was rolling the Steelheads Sunday, the Ottawa 67\u2019s were shutting out the host IceDogs 6-0, a bit of very positive news the Frontenacs\u2019 coaching staff didn\u2019t share with the players until after the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went into this five-game stretch looking to take care of business and we did,\u201d Kingston coach Troy Mann said. \u201cNow we\u2019re in control of our own destiny as far as our goal of getting to sixth place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Frontenacs took command of Sunday\u2019s contest from the opening shift, jumping out in front less than four minutes in with checking-line winger Nolan Buttar\u2019s 11th goal of the season. Brampton defenceman Peter Green stumbled without any forechecking pressure at his blueline, gifting a puck for the taking to Alex McLean who skated in alone and tried to deke Steelheads goalie Zack Bowen. After making the save on McLean, Bowen was in no position to stop Buttar\u2019s shot for the edge of the crease.<\/p>\n

Green accounted Brampton\u2019s only goal of the afternoon midway through the first period. Unforced errors in the Frontenacs\u2019 defensive zone gave the unchecked Green two swipes at the puck from in tight on Kingston goalie Gavin Betts. Betts made the first save, but he couldn\u2019t cover the second shot. Though these were Brampton\u2019s only two shots on goal to that point, the game was tied one-all<\/p>\n

Kingston continued to command a territorial advantage in the opening period, though it didn\u2019t translate into goals nor even shots through to the first intermission.<\/p>\n

In the middle frame, the visitors put the game away, with three goals in a six-minute stretch.<\/p>\n

The game-winner went to right winger Landon Wright on a pass from McLean that all but teed up a one-timer. Less than four minutes later, Wright made a searching pass to set up centre Kieren Dervin with a breakaway. The most consistent of the Kingston forwards on this road trip, Dervin deked netminder Bowen for the insurance goal.<\/p>\n

Mann had started the road trip with Dervin centering a first line with McLean on his left and overager Jack Dever on his right. The coach switched out Dever for Wright in Kingston\u2019s crucial 4-3 overtime victory in Erie on Saturday night<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWright and Dervin are our two fastest skaters and Wright\u2019s speed opens up some things for Dervin\u2019s playmaking,\u201d Mann said. \u201cI like the mix of Dever on our Slovak line [with centre Tomas Pobezal and Alex Misiak].\u201d<\/p>\n

Two minutes later, Kingston\u2019s second powerplay unit added a goal on Matthew Frost\u2019s fifth goal in six games. Defenceman Maleek McGowan bluffed a shot and fed Frost at the front of the net, giving Bowen no chance to recover.<\/p>\n

In the Kingston net, Betts was equal to anything that came his way through the final two periods, making 22 saves. The 17-year-old Betts improved his record to 20-17-1-1 and his save percentage to .906 in his first full season in the Ontario Hockey League.<\/p>\n
