{"id":539532,"date":"2026-03-16T05:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T05:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/539532\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T05:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T05:58:08","slug":"effects-of-time-change-may-last-longer-than-people-realize-counsellor-portageonline-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/539532\/","title":{"rendered":"Effects of time change may last longer than people realize: Counsellor &#8211; PortageOnline.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Has this week felt a little off?\u00a0If so, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Terry Warburton, the clinical director at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edenhealthcare.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eden\u2019s Recovery of Hope\u00a0Counselling<\/a>,\u00a0said that\u00a0a factor could be Sunday\u2019s time change,\u00a0which\u00a0can\u00a0have lingering effects well past the clock adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s &#8216;different for everybody\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Warburton emphasized that while losing an hour can affect daily life, the way people experience it is \u201cdifferent for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that each person&#8217;s circumstances during the transition, including where they are personally, whether they are well-rested, already feeling down, or navigating major life changes, can play a significant role.<\/p>\n<p>Related stories:<\/p>\n<p>A person\u2019s temperament, schedule, and flexibility at work can also shape how strongly the time change is felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a biological adjustment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] our nervous system working really hard to adapt to some changes, so our head can understand it, but our body might not be cooperating with us for a period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0potential\u00a0multiplier of pre-existing issues\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Warburton said the time change can lead some people to notice more anxious or depressed thoughts and feelings, which may be linked to how the body responds to the shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur nervous system is trying to adapt to this, &#8230;\u00a0which then can increase our cortisol,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften what I do is I want to find\u00a0out\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0going on in\u00a0[someone\u2019s]\u00a0life, &#8230;\u00a0and\u00a0then you add time\u00a0change\u00a0to it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She added that people sometimes underestimate how strongly the change can affect them, and that the adjustment period can last longer than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people take a few days [to adjust], and some people will take a couple of weeks,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[For] younger children, it will take much longer.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How can one address the impact of\u00a0the time\u00a0change?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for how to deal with the detrimental effects of time change, Warburton\u2019s advice boils down to one main concept: Showing grace to oneself (and others).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For children specifically, Warburton\u00a0recommends introducing incremental changes to the routine in the lead-up to the time change to ease the adjustment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A bit of patience, all around, also helps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s really important for the parents to be mindful that everybody might be feeling more\u00a0frustrated, and that the feelings could be more intense,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Children] are going through a much bigger adjustment. Their brains need more sleep and a more consistent routine to adjust than adults do, so all this is much harder\u00a0on\u00a0them.
