{"id":53961,"date":"2025-08-08T07:16:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T07:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/53961\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T07:16:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T07:16:07","slug":"butter-fingered-osprey-drops-fish-and-causes-fire-power-outage-in-canadian-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/53961\/","title":{"rendered":"Butter-Fingered Osprey Drops Fish And Causes Fire, Power Outage In Canadian Town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hmm&#8230; Ospreys sure have gotten clumsy lately&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>PublishedAugust 7, 2025 3:03 PM EDT\u2022UpdatedAugust 7, 2025 3:03 PM EDT<\/p>\n<p>FacebookTwitterEmailCopy Link<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">A town in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/category\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canada<\/a> found itself in a bizarre situation, and it was all thanks to an osprey that just couldn&#8217;t hang on to its lunch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/offbeat\/fishy-business-osprey-drops-dinner-sparks-fire-and-leaves-canadian-town-in-the-dark-ashcroft-british-columbia-canada-wildfire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Local 12<\/a>, fire crews in Ashcroft, British Columbia, were dispatched to a landscape fire on July 30 around noon local time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The crews \u2014 along with road crew members and workers from the local power company \u2014 ended up blasting 4,800 gallons of water on the blaze to put it out. Once that was done, it was time to start figuring out what caused the fire, which also led to a power outage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">They didn&#8217;t have to look too long to realize that the entire blaze had been started by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/category\/fish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Or, more specifically, a fish that some klutzy osprey dropped on the power lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">I&#8217;m not a bird guy, but I always thought ospreys were pretty cool. They skim across the water, snag themselves a fish, and then head off back to wherever it is they plan to eat to start chowing down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-1271691304.jpg\" alt=\"Osprey catching fish\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">an osprey on the hunt, in flight with a fish caught in a lake in northern finland<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Well, somewhere between whichever body of water that bird plucked its dinner out of and where it planned to eat, it let go of the fish. It went plummeting to earth, hit some powerlines, and produced sparks, which in turn lit some brush on fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">What a freak accident that is\u2026 if it is an accident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Look, fish can be tricky to hold on to. They&#8217;re slippery, they&#8217;re wet, and they wriggle all over the place. But that&#8217;s with human hands.
