\n How Vallejo broke barriers to make tennis history for Paraguay<\/p>\n

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo<\/a> has overcome formidable obstacles to become the third Paraguayan player to crack the Top 100 in PIF ATP Rankings history.<\/p>\n \nWith virtually no tournaments in Vallejo\u2019s home country, it has meant years of long travel journeys to Europe and the United States. Paraguayan players have also long faced steep odds given the minimal precedent of professional success. Yet the 21-year-old Vallejo, who this year is 16-2 at ATP Challenger-level, has accomplished his childhood dream and made history in the process. <\/p>\n \n\u201cIt\u2019s not easy to be Top 100 from Paraguay. I\u2019ve been working a lot to get there,\u201d Vallejo told ATPTour.com. \u201cBut also my goal is not just to be Top 100, it\u2019s to be more and more up the rankings.\u201d<\/p>\n \nTo get where he is today, at World No. 99, Vallejo has had to carve his own path, facing challenges that many players never encounter.<\/p>\n \n\u201cAll my points, all my tournaments are always in other countries,\u201d Vallejo said. \u201cMy hard work and my determination got me here to where I am. I didn\u2019t get wild cards like Europeans or other countries from South America have. <\/p>\n \n\u201cThe airport in Paraguay is very small so I always have to take a lot of flights to get where I want to be. For example, if I want to go to the United States, I need to take two or three flights to get there because there\u2019s no direct flights. You\u2019re also fighting against what everyone thinks you should do. The mentality [in Paraguay] is not to go pro.\u201d<\/p>\n \nThat notion of \u2018not going pro\u2019 never sat right with Vallejo. It only fueled his drive.<\/p>\n \nRaised in Paraguay\u2019s capital city Asuncion, \u2018Dani\u2019 grew up playing tennis from a young age alongside his father, Gustavo, and two older brothers: Joaquin and Juan Pablo.<\/p>\n \nJoaquin, who now doubles as Dani\u2019s agent, laughs when sharing memories of his youngest brother, recalling \u201cHe was always following me and my middle brother around\u201d. Dani agreed with that sentiment: \u201cI always wanted to play with them, they wouldn\u2019t let me.\u201d<\/p>\n \nWhile Joaquin and Juan Pablo competed collegiately in the United States, Dani was set on the pro path, and his father had unwavering belief.<\/p>\n \n\u201cMy father always told us, \u2018He\u2019s going to be special’,” Joaquin said, speaking of Dani. \u201cHe was different already when he was 12 years old. My father always believed in him that he\u2019s going to be a professional tennis player and he\u2019s going to make a living from it.\u201d<\/p>\n \nAt age 12, Vallejo travelled alone to the junior Orange Bowl in south Florida, his first tournament outside South America. It was a long journey that served as a glimpse of life on the road. Two years later, Vallejo returned to Florida to attend IMG Academy on a one-year scholarship. A teenager at the time, Vallejo was far from family during the Covid pandemic. \u201cHe went there by himself, that was really brave,\u201d said Joaquin.<\/p>\n \nVallejo became the junior No. 1 in 2022 and then had a scholarship offer to train at Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in Mallorca, Spain. Again, Vallejo left home for one year.<\/p>\n \nVallejo\u2019s sacrifices have paid dividends. In 2024, he became the youngest Paraguayan to win an ATP Challenger title. Vallejo is now enjoying his career-best start to a season, having claimed two Challenger titles. He also reached an additional final at the Brasilia Challenger this month.<\/p>\n \nHis breakthrough into the Top 100 could not have come at a better time. This week, he returns home for the biggest tennis tournament in Paraguay, the Munich Ultra Paraguay Open<\/a>. Asuncion, Paraguay returned to the ATP Challenger calendar in 2024 after a 13-year absence.<\/p>\n Vallejo’s time in Asuncion will serve as a grand homecoming and celebration for the top seed, who is undoubtedly making everyone in Paraguay proud.<\/p>\n \n\u201cHe\u2019s becoming a star here in Paraguay,\u201d said Joaquin. \u201cCounting all the sports, I think he\u2019s already top five in the most important athletes right now. There is a guy who is in F2 [Joshua D\u00fcrksen], then I would say Dani is already there and then we have a few football players.\u201d<\/p>\n \nVallejo joins Victor Pecci<\/a> and Ramon Delgado<\/a> as the only Paraguayans to ascend to the Top 100 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Pecci reached a career-high No. 9 in 1980. Delgado was the most recent Paraguayan to be above the Top 100 threshold in 2005.
