The National Hockey League and the NHL Players\u2019 Association announced the host cities Monday in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/world-cup-of-hockey-2028-to-be-played-in-calgary-edmonton-prague\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">joint media release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The release says Calgary\u2019s new Scotia Place arena, Rogers Place in Edmonton and O2 Arena in Prague will host the best-on-best international tournament, which is scheduled for February 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories:<\/p>\n<p>Calgary and Prague will each host seven games, including six round-robin games and one elimination game. Edmonton will host the two semifinal games and the championship game.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-nation tournament will feature 17 games, along with fan events and media programming.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta\u2019s government said the province secured the tournament through a competitive bid process against other North American destinations.<\/p>\n<p>In a provincial news release Monday, the government said the bid was led by a partnership that included the Province of Alberta, Explore Edmonton, Tourism Calgary, OEG Sports &amp; Entertainment and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>The government said hosting the tournament is expected to generate about $375 million in economic activity, support more than 43,000 jobs and account for nearly 172,000 hotel room nights across the province.<\/p>\n<p>The province committed $15 million toward securing the event, while the cities of Calgary and Edmonton each contributed $2.5 million toward the rights fee through their tourism organizations, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>Premier Danielle Smith said Alberta\u2019s passion for hockey helped secure the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlberta is the right choice to host the World Cup of Hockey 2028. This bid was earned; few places in the world live and breathe hockey the way Alberta does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the tournament brings together the world\u2019s top players to represent their countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no international competition in sports that matches the passion, skill, and excitement of hockey\u2019s best-on-best coming together to represent their countries \u2014 last year\u2019s 4 Nations Face-Off and the recent Winter Olympics were just the latest examples,\u201d Bettman said in the media release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe at the National Hockey League and our partners at the National Hockey League Players\u2019 Association can\u2019t wait to bring the World Cup of Hockey 2028 to three spectacular venues in three cities that shine when staging big events. We know Calgary, Edmonton and Prague will serve as fantastic hosts for hockey fans from all over the globe, and that the greatest hockey players in the world will compete on a level that will make this event truly memorable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh said players are eager to return to international competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing off the amazing international hockey played at the recent Olympic Winter Games, NHL players are very excited to return to international hockey at the World Cup of Hockey 2028,\u201d Walsh said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalgary, Edmonton and Prague are cities with very deep roots in hockey, and the games will be played in three hockey venues that will be amongst the best in the world. The players cannot wait to don their home country\u2019s sweaters in Alberta and Prague in February 2028.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert Hayes, president and CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, said hosting the tournament at Scotia Place will be a major moment for the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHosting the World Cup of Hockey at Scotia Place is an exciting moment for Calgary and for hockey fans across Alberta,\u201d Hayes said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the future home of entertainment in our city, Scotia Place will provide an incredible stage to welcome the world and showcase Calgary\u2019s passion for hockey. We look forward to hosting this best-on-best tournament with Edmonton and are incredibly grateful to the NHL, NHLPA and our partners for the opportunity to bring one of the game\u2019s premier international events to our province.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stu Ballantyne, president and chief operating officer of OEG Sports &amp; Entertainment, said Edmonton is also looking forward to hosting the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled that Edmonton has been selected as a co-host of the World Cup of Hockey 2028 along with our partners in Calgary,\u201d Ballantyne said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs seen recently with the 4 Nations Face-Off and Winter Olympic Games, there is nothing like best-on-best hockey, and there is no better place than Alberta, the heartland of hockey, to host the world for one of hockey\u2019s biggest events. We would like to thank the NHL and NHLPA for selecting Alberta, and all the other partners who came together to secure this major international event for our province. Fans, get ready for something special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2028 tournament will be the fourth World Cup of Hockey.
