{"id":54488,"date":"2025-08-08T12:38:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T12:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/54488\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T12:38:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T12:38:07","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/54488\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global shares were mixed as investors assessed corporate earnings and U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s nomination for the open spot on the Federal Reserve\u2019s governing board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory after a mixed close on major U.S. markets yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher after the market eased from record highs yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from Algonquin Power &amp; Utilities Corp., Emera Inc. and Constellation Software Inc. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Trump said yesterday he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-trump-federal-reserve-nominee-stephen-miran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-trump-federal-reserve-nominee-stephen-miran\/\">would nominate<\/a> Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to temporarily fill a vacant seat at the Fed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He holds similar views to Trump, who has berated chairman Jerome Powell for being \u201ctoo late\u201d in cutting interest rates, even though growth is holding up and inflation is ticking higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt locks in a vote for rate cuts at all the meetings between now and the end of January,\u201d said Ray Attrill, head of FX strategy at National Australia Bank in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/article-when-don-meets-vlad-world-market-themes-for-the-week-ahead\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">When Don meets Vlad: World market themes for the week ahead<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.24 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 slipped 0.04 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX was little changed and France\u2019s CAC 40 advanced 0.22 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 1.85 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng slid 0.89 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices edged higher but were poised for the steepest weekly losses since late June on a tariff-hit economic outlook and a potential meeting between Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures were up 0.78 per cent to US$66.95 a barrel, on track to decline more than 4 per cent week-over-week. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 0.67 per cent to US$64.31 a barrel, set to fall nearly 4.9 per cent on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe Russian leader is expected to insist on having his territorial demands granted, a hard sell for [Ukraine], while his U.S. counterpart will push for a ceasefire,\u201d said PVM analyst Tamas Varga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cNo breakthrough is anticipated, and the U.S. following through on its threat to impose secondary sanctions on those dealing in Russian energy &#8211; including China and India &#8211; remains a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold rose 0.4 per cent to US$3,400.40 an ounce. U.S. gold futures gained 1.02 per cent to US$3,489.20, after hitting an all-time high of US$3,534.10 on reports of duties on U.S. imports of bullion bars, most of which come from Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. gold futures climbed to a record high August 8. after a report that the United States had imposed tariffs on imports of one-kilogram gold bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-gmr-5\">Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.68 US cents to 72.86 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 0.3 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, declined 0.17 per cent to 98.23. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro fell 0.17 per cent to US$1.1648. The British pound slid 0.04 per cent to US$1.3440. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was flat at 4.259 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan household spending and bank lending<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">(8:30 a.m. ET) Canadian employment for July. Data show the economy shed 40,800 jobs, compared with consensus rise of 15,000.
