{"id":545252,"date":"2026-03-18T20:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T20:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/545252\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T20:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T20:39:08","slug":"community-response-overwhelming-for-surrey-school-affected-by-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/545252\/","title":{"rendered":"Community response \u2018overwhelming\u2019 for Surrey school affected by fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>              Community response \u2018overwhelming\u2019 for Surrey school affected by fire<\/p>\n<p class=\"pubStamp\">Published 12:00 pm Wednesday, March 18, 2026<\/p>\n<p>A Surrey elementary school principal says the response from the community has been overwhelming after a Jan. 30 fire displaced most of the school\u2019s students and staff.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks following a fire at Woodland Park Elementary, an outpouring of community support is helping the school\u2019s denizens move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been very challenging, but it has been a time for the community to come together,\u201d said Woodland Park principal Lisa Chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Chambers shared that support has come from across Surrey and beyond, with schools, local organizations and community members stepping up to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community has shown incredible strength and resilience at a very challenging time for us,\u201d Chambers said.<\/p>\n<p>She shared that many donations have been made, including items such as indoor shoes for primary students, emergency supplies from RONA, and even ukuleles so music classes can continue while equipment is being replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Chambers also noted Surrey Fire Service firefighters contributed $10,000 to help, with Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke donating an additional $5,000.<\/p>\n<p>Local schools have provided learning materials and library books, while the district came together to assemble large emergency supply packages for teachers, which include art supplies and hands-on learning resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been very grateful for the wraparound support that we\u2019ve been receiving,\u201d shared Chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Although she is thankful for how quickly the Surrey school district were able to reopen parts of Woodland Park and come up with a working plan for other students elsewhere in the school community \u2014 such as attending <a href=\"https:\/\/peacearchnews.com\/2026\/02\/05\/surrey-students-welcomed-at-new-school-after-fire-displacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Regent Road Elementary<\/a> \u2014 Chambers says returning fully will still be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know initially it\u2019s going to be really hard going back into the building because we\u2019ve lost everything,\u201d she shared. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of items that were donated so that we can get by and at least provide some resemblance of normalcy for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key player in helping to support the school came through <a href=\"https:\/\/thesinghfoundation.org\/?utm_source=ig&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=link_in_bio&amp;fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMjU2MjgxMDQwNTU4AAGnAkl2OHT6edSBJQZl37H48R2Y-APDg_Hb9w3ovwIi1cRtplBB8Uc4vTxciD8_aem_MU2k-IPLBXSnpebdw4jKtg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Singh <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesinghfoundation.org\/?utm_source=ig&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=link_in_bio&amp;fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMjU2MjgxMDQwNTU4AAGnAkl2OHT6edSBJQZl37H48R2Y-APDg_Hb9w3ovwIi1cRtplBB8Uc4vTxciD8_aem_MU2k-IPLBXSnpebdw4jKtg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Foundation<\/a>, which led a <a href=\"https:\/\/peacearchnews.com\/2026\/03\/06\/singh-foundation-matches-donations-after-surrey-school-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">donation matching campaign<\/a> alongside Surrey Schools for Woodland Park Elementary.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation pledged to match donations up to $35,000 to help replace critical technology lost in the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is over and above anything of our wildest dreams,\u201d said Chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Singh Foundation president and CEO Bob Singh said the initiative reflects the organization\u2019s goal of supporting youth in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2022, the Singh Foundation works with the Surrey school district to identify students in need.
