But what if you want to translate into more esoteric \u201clanguages\u201d like <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.kagi.com\/?from=en&amp;to=linkedin&amp;text=I+am+starting+a+new+job+at+Google+next+Monday.+I+will+work+as+a+contractor+cleaning+toilets.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLinkedIn Speak,\u201d<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.kagi.com\/?from=en&amp;to=gen-z-slang&amp;text=i+really+enjoy+this+warm+weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGen Z slang,\u201d<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/giziti.bsky.social\/post\/3mhbyrtjtlk2s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201chorny Margaret Thatcher\u201d<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>This week, many people across the Internet have been bemused to find that the AI-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.kagi.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kagi Translate<\/a> can perform these and countless other unlikely \u201ctranslation\u201d tasks. And while the collective discovery highlights the playful, creative side of large language models, it also exposes the risks of letting users play with generalized LLM tools.<\/p>\n<p>What is a \u201clanguage,\u201d really?<\/p>\n<p>While you might know Kagi best as <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2025\/08\/enough-is-enough-i-dumped-googles-worsening-search-for-kagi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the paid competitor to Google\u2019s ever-worsening search product<\/a>, the company launched its Kagi Translate tool <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.kagi.com\/kagi-translate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back in 2024<\/a>, saying at the time that it was a \u201csimply better\u201d competitor to tools like Google Translate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepl.com\/en\/translator\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DeepL<\/a>. At launch, the company said Kagi Translate \u201cuses a combination of LLMs, selecting and optimizing the best output for each task,\u201d a fact that \u201ccan occasionally lead to quirks that we\u2019re actively working to resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241107193012\/https:\/\/translate.kagi.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first versions of the tool<\/a> featured simple dropdown menus to choose from 244 different languages for the source and target of the translation.
