Ontario’s police watchdog has been notified following an officer-involved shooting in the city’s west end.<\/p>\n
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is now investigating the incident.<\/p>\n
Windsor Police responded to a report of a robbery in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street around 6 p.m. Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Police say the suspect was tracked to the area of Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street East, where officers located a man armed with a knife.<\/p>\n
During the encounter, the suspect was shot by police. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n
Paul Smith says he watched the entire incident unfold and says he dropped to his lawn to take cover when the shots were fired.<\/p>\n
“I was sprawled out on the front lawn, and maybe 60 metres up, that’s when you see the suspect running… or walking I mean… and the rest of the police just surround him. And… I was in fear.”<\/p>\n
Brad Tayles says he also saw the incident happen. <\/p>\n
He says the suspect had a huge knife but police acted quickly.<\/p>\n
“Literally it was about a 12-inch blade, and within seconds there was two squad cars, and all I hear is ‘drop the knife, drop the knife’, and I’m telling you, I’ve never seen more professional performance [by police]… they had like a half-moon.”<\/p>\n
He says\u00a0the man was walking around with the knife.<\/p>\n
“He just kept backing up, backing up, and he’s kind of waving it still and I was like ‘oh man, this is not going to be good’. Sure enough, I’m standing on the corner and all I hear was pop, pop, pop.”<\/p>\n
Tayles says he doesn’t know what happened before police showed up.<\/p>\n
“When I walked out of the door at work here, he was standing in front of the ATM with literally a 12-inch knife. So, maybe there was a robbery… I don’t know, but it was right here. The police did an amazing job.”<\/p>\n
Rankin Avenue remains closed to public access between Wyandotte Street West and University Avenue.<\/p>\n
Since the SIU has taken over the investigation, Windsor Police are unable to provide further information.<\/p>\n
