{"id":546911,"date":"2026-03-19T14:32:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T14:32:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/546911\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T14:32:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T14:32:28","slug":"uk-pension-fund-buys-into-dublins-poolbeg-incinerator-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/546911\/","title":{"rendered":"UK pension fund buys into Dublin\u2019s Poolbeg incinerator \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poolbeg\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/poolbeg\/\">Poolbeg<\/a> incinerator in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> is getting a new (partial) owner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) \u2013 one of the biggest private pension funds in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">UK<\/a> \u2013 is taking a 50 per cent stake in the company behind the incinerator, Dublin Waste to Energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The deal sees USS buy the stake from Encyclis, formerly Covanta, which has been a shareholder in the incinerator\u2019s parent company, with the sale expected to close this summer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUSS, which has a strong track record of investment in infrastructure and energy assets, recognises the crucial role of Dublin Waste to Energy in Ireland\u2019s waste management and baseload power generation,\u201d Dublin Waste to Energy said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs a long-term investor in infrastructure, USS says the acquisition represents a strong fit with its mandate and is committed to contributing to the plant\u2019s continued success,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Terms of the deal have not been formally disclosed, but a glance at the company\u2019s most recent accounts show the business turned a \u20ac31.9 million profit on sales of \u20ac115.4 million. As energy prices rocket, those numbers are likely to increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Long a lightning rod for local opposition and environmental groups, the incinerator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/poolbeg-incinerator-to-fire-up-after-20-years-of-opposition-1.2984949\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/poolbeg-incinerator-to-fire-up-after-20-years-of-opposition-1.2984949\">took 20 years<\/a> from when it was first proposed to become operational almost a decade ago. It now burns more than 600,000 tonnes of rubbish per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clearly it is paying its way for shareholders, which include Dublin City Council as part of a public-private partnership. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The infamous Poolbeg incinerator in Dublin is getting a new (partial) owner.
