\n\tWith the dust settling on a historic 98th Academy Awards, the cycle begins anew.<\/p>\n

\n\tOur annual tradition of blindly forecasting awards season is meant to be fun and expectation-free. Still, looking at the theatrical calendar ahead, one thing is clear: the auteurs are coming in full force.<\/p>\n

\n\tSight unseen, Warner Bros. appears to have the most formidable lineup.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu reunites with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki for \u201cDigger,\u201d a mysterious project starring Tom Cruise, who, after receiving an honorary Oscar this past year, could be invited back to the ceremony the very next year to take home a competitive one. Could he be the new Paul Newman?<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Denis Villeneuve will complete his sweeping sci-fi saga with \u201cDune: Part Three.\u201d With the first two installments amassing a combined 14 nominations and eight wins, the finale is poised to be a dominant force in the technical races \u2014 and perhaps more.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix is loading up with a characteristically deep bench of awards hopefuls.<\/p>\n

\n\tDavid Fincher directs Quentin Tarantino\u2019s script in \u201cThe Adventures of Cliff Booth,\u201d reteaming with Brad Pitt, who reprises the role that won him an Oscar. The project serves as a standalone chapter in the \u201cOnce Upon a Time in\u2026Hollywood\u201d universe. It could even arrive later this year under a different title. (Did anyone else notice the film\u2019s title wasn\u2019t shown during its Super Bowl teaser?)<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere, Greg Kwedar follows up the surprise success of \u201cSing Sing\u201d with \u201cSaturn Return,\u201d a romantic drama starring Charles Melton and Rachel Brosnahan. Fernando Meirelles, the filmmaker behind the Brazilian drama \u201cCity of God\u201d (2003), returns with \u201cHere Comes the Flood,\u201d starring Denzel Washington. And Greta Gerwig takes a bold swing with the adaptation of C.S. Lewis\u2019 \u201cNarnia: The Magician\u2019s Nephew.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA24 continues its run as an indie kingmaker with a formidable slate.<\/p>\n

\n\tLance Oppenheim could make a major leap with the investigative drama \u201cPrimetime,\u201d starring Robert Pattinson and inspired by the book \u201cTo Catch a Predator.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMatt Johnson directs the Anthony Bourdain biopic \u201cTony,\u201d starring \u201cThe Holdovers\u201d breakout Dominic Sessa alongside Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas. Meanwhile, Jesse Eisenberg writes and directs a musical starring Julianne Moore and Halle Bailey, produced by Emma Stone. If even half of these titles connect with audiences and critics, A24 could dominate the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tNeon is positioning itself as a serious player across the prestige landscape.<\/p>\n

\n\tPalme d\u2019Or-winning filmmaker Cristian Mungiu returns with the drama \u201cFjord,\u201d starring Sebastian Stan and recent best actress nominee Renate Reinsve. Twin filmmaking brothers Arie and Chuko Esiri offer a reinterpretation of \u201cMrs. Dalloway\u201d with \u201cClarissa,\u201d starring Sophie Okonedo.<\/p>\n

\n\tRy\u00fbsuke Hamaguchi follows his Oscar-winning international feature \u201cDrive My Car\u201d with the French-language drama \u201cAll of a Sudden,\u201d which should be, at the very least, intriguing. Any one of these titles could emerge as a breakout at Cannes, Venice or Telluride.<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal Pictures will bank heavily on Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d which arrives with a star-studded ensemble including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong\u2019o, and enormous expectations following Nolan\u2019s historic success with \u201cOppenheimer.\u201d The studio also has Steven Spielberg\u2019s sci-fi project \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d starring Emily Blunt and Josh O\u2019Connor.<\/p>\n

\n\tUnder the Disney umbrella is 20th Century Studios, with the anticipated \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d in which Meryl Streep reprises her Oscar-nominated role. Searchlight Pictures hopes to mount a comeback with Tony Gilroy directing the drama \u201cBehemoth!,\u201d starring Pedro Pascal. Martin McDonagh will surely make an awards play with \u201cWild Horse Nine,\u201d starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell \u2014 a project that feels destined for a fall festival launch. And, of course, there\u2019s Marvel Studios\u2019 \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d which will explode at the end of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Sundance Film Festival already delivered an early contender in Beth de Ara\u00fajo\u2019s \u201cJosephine,\u201d starring Gemma Chan, Mason Reeves and Channing Tatum. Acquired by Sumerian Pictures, the film could emerge as this year\u2019s breakout success story.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmazon MGM Studios already has something promising with the Ryan Gosling-led space adventure \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d alongside \u201cI Play Rocky,\u201d the making-of story behind Sylvester Stallone\u2019s 1976 classic. The film stars Anthony Ippolito and is directed by \u201cGreen Book\u201d filmmaker Peter Farrelly. Lionsgate is also gearing up for \u201cMichael,\u201d featuring the King of Pop\u2019s nephew Jaafar Jackson alongside Colman Domingo.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony Pictures will be looking to break back into the prestige realm with \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d the sequel to the best picture-nominated \u201cThe Social Network\u201d (2010), with Aaron Sorkin directing and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. The studio could also find success with blockbuster fare such as \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d with Tom Holland returning as the web-slinging superhero.<\/p>\n

\n\tFrom Sony\u2019s boutique subsidiary, Sony Pictures Classics, the company already has Sundance breakouts to shepherd through the year, including the John Turturro vehicle \u201cThe Only Living Pickpocket in New York\u201d and \u201cBedford Park\u201d from debut director Stephanie Ahn. It also has the U.S. release of the drama \u201cI Swear,\u201d which was at the center of the recent BAFTA Awards and BBC controversy, as well as Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s Spanish-language return \u201cBitter Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFocus Features will have a pair of documentaries from Oscar-winning directors: \u201cThe AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist\u201d from Daniel Roher (\u201cNavalny\u201d) and \u201cLorne\u201d from Morgan Neville (\u201c20 Feet From Stardom\u201d). In the summer, it will release the war drama \u201cPressure,\u201d starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser; a remake of \u201cSense and Sensibility,\u201d starring Daisy Edgar-Jones; and another Robert Eggers film, \u201cWerwulf,\u201d reuniting Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp. The studio could also have Paul Greengrass\u2019 13th-century period film \u201cThe Uprising,\u201d starring Andrew Garfield, if it lands on this year\u2019s calendar.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2026 calendar will mark Paramount Pictures\u2019 first full-year slate under David Ellison, following the company\u2019s acquisition in August 2025. In addition to blockbuster fare, expect the untitled prison film from \u201cLa La Land\u201d Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle, starring Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig. The studio also has David Ayer\u2019s action film \u201cHeart of the Beast,\u201d starring Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons, which wrapped last summer. And while its awards prospects remain uncertain, there is considerable excitement surrounding Trey Parker\u2019s musical comedy \u201cWhitney Springs,\u201d featuring Kendrick Lamar.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndie studio Magnolia Pictures will look to capitalize on the Sundance hit \u201cI Want Your Sex,\u201d along with Kent Jones\u2019 \u201cLate Fame,\u201d starring Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tBleecker Street has two anticipated titles that could generate buzz: Alex Gibney\u2019s \u201cMusk,\u201d described as a \u201cdefinitive and unvarnished examination\u201d of Elon Musk, and an untitled project from Mike Leigh that is expected to debut later this year, featuring a potential standout role from Marion Bailey.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the wild cards still seeking U.S. distribution is Werner Herzog\u2019s \u201cBucking Fastard,\u201d based on the true story of twin sisters and starring Kate Mara and Rooney Mara in dual roles.<\/p>\n

\n\tJoel Coen\u2019s next solo outing, \u201cJack of Spades,\u201d is already generating chatter and stars Josh O\u2019Connor, who may be entering \u201coverdue for Oscar love\u201d territory.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\u2018Wildwood\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\tAnimation will also play a major role in 2026. Pixar is already seeing success with \u201cHoppers,\u201d while \u201cToy Story 5\u201d is expected to be another box office juggernaut. Walt Disney Animation Studios will release \u201cHexed,\u201d about a teenager with magical powers. Universal aims to position \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d in the awards conversation, while Illumination will try again with \u201cMinions & Monsters.\u201d DreamWorks Animation is generating early buzz for \u201cForgotten Island\u201d from \u201cPuss in Boots: The Last Wish\u201d director Joel Crawford.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix has partnered with Brad Bird on \u201cRay Gunn,\u201d which follows the last human private detective in a futuristic world, voiced by John Ratzenberger. GKIDS will also release the next Aardman project, \u201cShaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWildwood,\u201d the long-awaited feature from Laika and director Travis Knight, will finally arrive this year, following the successes of \u201cCoraline,\u201d \u201cKubo and the Two Strings\u201d and \u201cMissing Link.\u201d Warner Bros. Animation will also reveal a new take on Dr. Seuss\u2019 \u201cThe Cat in the Hat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt remains unclear whether the hybrid film \u201cCoyote vs. Acme\u201d will qualify for the category, but anticipation remains high after Ketchup Entertainment acquired the shelved project.<\/p>\n
