{"id":547497,"date":"2026-03-19T20:40:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T20:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/547497\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T20:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T20:40:12","slug":"almost-40-of-canadian-youth-blow-past-recommended-screen-time-data-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/547497\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost 40% of Canadian youth blow past recommended screen time: data &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/en\/catalogue\/75-006-X202600100003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Statistics Canada study<\/a> has found that nearly 40 per cent of Canadian youth appear to be exceeding screen time recommendations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The study analyzed Canadian youth cohorts in two different points of time: in 2019, when they were aged 12 to 17, and in 2023, when the same group was aged 16 to 21.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows 37 per cent of the group exceeded the recommendations in both 2019 and 2023, with only 14 per cent of youth meeting screen time guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>As well, 49 per cent followed screen time guidelines in only one year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/csepguidelines.ca\/guidelines\/children-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines<\/a> recommends that children and youth aged five to 17 years accumulate \u201cno more than two hours per day of recreational screen time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Men and boys were found to be 40 per cent \u201cmore likely to exceed screen time guidelines in both years\u201d than women and girls with 34 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMixed results surrounding mental health impact\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>About 58 per cent who met <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/screen-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">screen time<\/a> guidelines in both 2019 and 2023 reported \u201cexcellent or very good mental health,\u201d compared with 38 per cent of youth who exceeded guidelines in both years.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison to those who exceeded screen time recommendations, 25 per cent found that \u201cmost of their days were not at all stressful,\u201d and 38 per cent reported \u201cexcellent or very good mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Adults can play a pivotal role helping kids with their mental health'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/AFF_BLUE_MONDAY_ONLINE_V2_STILL.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:26<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAdults can play a pivotal role helping kids with their mental health\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>In addition, among youth who met screen time guidelines in only one of the two years, well-being outcomes were found to be \u201cmixed,\u201d with results \u201cgenerally falling between those of youth who met the guidelines and those of youth who exceeded them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Also, youth who met screen time recommendations in both 2019 and 2023 were \u201cless likely\u201d to report body image issues, with 75 per cent who met the guidelines saying in 2023 that they \u201cnever felt preoccupied with a desire to be thinner or felt so only a few times within the past 12 months,\u201d compared to 69 per cent of those who \u201cexceeded screen time recommendations in both years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Average grades were also found to be higher among youth who met screen time recommendations in both surveyed years.
