Throughout the day, residents in a Mississauga neighbourhood have been dropping flowers at a makeshift memorial right next to a crossing where a 13-year-old boy was fatally struck by a GO train on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The victim\u2019s uncle was emotional when he stopped by the memorial on Alexandra Avenue.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Portuguese, he said the incident has left the family heartbroken.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, we\u2019re not in the right mind to think of anything. It\u2019s not easy. Right now, our hearts are broken,\u201d he said, breaking down in tears.<\/p>\n
He shared that the boy\u2019s mother is in the hospital and other family members are on the way from Portugal.<\/p>\n
Russ Staples says he had seen the boy, who lived two doors down from him, \u201cbuzzing around all the time\u201d while riding his gas-powered bike. <\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody\u2019s in shock,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Staples had been concerned the boy might get hit by a car, but he said, \u201cI never dreamed this would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seeing the stopped train and people gathering near the crossing on Wednesday afternoon, Staples said he knew it was the boy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought that\u2019s got to be him because I don\u2019t see any other kids going around the neighbourhood on a little bike like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Staples was among the residents who laid flowers at the memorial on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust to show that we were thinking about him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Police were called to scene at approximately 2:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
Const. Tyler Bell said the victim and another \u201cyoung child\u201d were on some type of motorized bike when they crossed the barrier. He said the warning signals were working, noting the gate was down, lights were flashing, and bells were ringing as the train approached.<\/p>\n
They were not accompanied by an adult. The child has not been identified.<\/p>\n

Shubham Shubham lives across the crossing and recounted hearing a loud train horn just before the collision.<\/p>\n
When he came out of the house, Shubham said he saw one child screaming. Paramedics shortly arrived and performed life-saving measures on the child.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was very terrifying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In a statement published on social media Thursday, Premier Doug Ford said he was \u201cvery sad to hear\u201d of the boy\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
