Jessie Dosanjh, DPD Chief Harj Sidhu, GNFB board members, community leaders and volunteers came together for an open house and closing ceremony to mark the Nordel Centre food bank’s last day of operations.

“We are deeply thankful for the support we have received over the years. While we close this chapter in Delta, we are committed to continuing and expanding our services to better serve those in need,” Neeraj Walia, secretary and head of operations at Guru Nanak Food Bank, said in an email to the Reporter.

For 790 days, GNFB has operated out of the 7,000 square-foot facility at 11188 84th Ave., which the building’s owners — Gurcharan Minhas, Satinder Singh and Ajaypal Sing — provided free of cost.

“We originally intended to be at this location for two years. We have now been there for over three years, and the plaza owner has been incredibly generous, providing the space to us entirely rent-free for the duration of our stay,” Walia said.

“However, we must now vacate as the plaza needs to be rented due to construction delays at the site.”

Last year, the site’s owners pitched a mixed-use high-rise project featuring two 24-storey towers, a 14-storey tower and a six-storey building. As part of its application, Westcorp Holdings Ltd. requested the city consider the support it provided to Guru Nanak Food Bank as a community contribution, noting the owner had foregone $660,000 in revenue over 30 months.

In May of 2025, council declined to debate or vote on Westcorp Holdings’ application, effectively sending the site’s owners back to the drawing board.

Currently, GNFB proudly serves more than 22,000 clients every month, its operations supported entirely through donations from the community and the tireless work of dedicated volunteers.

From its Nordel Centre location alone, GNFB distributed over 51,000 food packages to those experiencing food insecurity, and supported international students arriving in the country with more than 3,200 Welcome to Canada packages.

In the next couple of weeks, GNFB will complete the move from North Delta to a new facility located at Unit 20, 13088 84 Ave. in Newton.

Despite the forthcoming move to Surrey, Walia said Guru Nanak Food Bank remains committed to the Delta community, noting residents can continue to access the organization’s food bank services five days a week, from 1 to 6 p.m., at the Kennedy Seniors’ Recreation Centre (11760 88th Ave.).

Surrey residents and those from elsewhere in the region will continue to be served from GNFB’s original location in the city, 15299 68 Ave.

North Delta food bank moving to Surrey Published 3:30 pm Thursday, March 19, 2026 After more than three…

[194299
49,48,87674
0":"post-547804","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-surrey","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-surrey
["GET
