Family members of a boy fatally struck by a GO train this week are devastated and their hearts are broken at his death, the boy’s uncle says.<\/p>\n

Henrique Joao Fresco, who speaks only Portuguese, visited a train crossing on Thursday on Alexandra Avenue, south of Fourth Street, near where his 13-year-old nephew was killed by a train on the Lakeshore West line on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“This is just a horrible situation and this is, I think, every parent’s worst nightmare. To have something like this happen at March break when you have children that are out playing, it’s just such an incredible tragedy,” Dasko said. <\/p>\n

“This is a a community that is very much [a tight knit] community and this has and will continue to rock the community for quite some time.”<\/p>\n

Dasko said the incident should prompt parents to remind their children that they need to play safely and to obey the rules.<\/p>\n

“We want every kid to come back and not have this type of horrible situation where we have lost a poor child,” Dasko said. “This is unimaginable and very tragic.”<\/p>\n

“We all have a role to play in preventing rail-related injuries and that often involves making sure that we’re having the conversations with our loved ones to ensure that they know the rules of different signs and different signals. But Day said that’s not a realistic solution, given that Canada has about 42,000 kilometres of track and there are 25,000 places in the country where railways meet roadways.<\/p>\n

“Grade separation at each one of those is not practical,” he said.<\/p>\n

Metrolinx to conduct full investigation into collision<\/p>\n

In a statement, Metrolinx expressed condolences to the boy\u2019s family and said the provincial transit agency will conduct a full investigation. <\/p>\n
