His name has not been released.

Peel Regional Police said emergency personnel were called to the area, west of Long Branch GO station, shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found the boy. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the boy and another child were riding motorized bikes near the tracks when the collision happened.

Peel Regional Police say the boy, struck by the GO train Wednesday, was pronounced dead at the scene. (Aizick Grimman/CBC)Incident has ‘rocked’ community, councillor says

Mississauga Coun. Stephen Dasko, who represents Ward 1, said the community is reeling over the boy’s death.

“This is just a horrible situation and this is, I think, every parent’s worst nightmare. To have something like this happen at March break when you have children that are out playing, it’s just such an incredible tragedy,” Dasko said.

“This is a a community that is very much [a tight knit] community and this has and will continue to rock the community for quite some time.”

Dasko said the incident should prompt parents to remind their children that they need to play safely and to obey the rules.

“We want every kid to come back and not have this type of horrible situation where we have lost a poor child,” Dasko said. “This is unimaginable and very tragic.”

There was a large police presence in the area near where the boy was killed on Wednesday. (CBC)

According to police, evidence suggests the boy went around the barrier and was struck by the train. Police said the initial investigation suggests that all traffic signals were working at the time, and the train crossing arms were down with the lights flashing.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, meanwhile, took to social media Thursday morning to express his condolences.

“I was very sad to hear of the death of the boy who was struck by a train yesterday in Mississauga. My sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones,” Ford said on X, formerly Twitter.

‘Any time is train time,’ safety advocate says

Chris Day, national director of Operation Lifesaver Canada, an advocacy group that promotes safety around railways, said rail-related injuries and deaths are “entirely preventable.” He said the group’s thoughts are with the child’s loved ones.

“We all have a role to play in preventing rail-related injuries and that often involves making sure that we’re having the conversations with our loved ones to ensure that they know the rules of different signs and different signals. They know how to interact with crossings. They know not to walk down tracks because anytime is train time,” Day said.

Rail-related injuries and deaths are ‘entirely preventable,’ according to Chris Day, national director of Operation Lifesaver Canada, an advocacy group that promotes safety around railways. (CBC)

Day said the group strongly encourages parents to talk to their children about rail safety. Education and awareness are elements to get the message out, he said.

In the aftermath of the death, some have called for more grade separation, which would involve installing overpasses or underpasses, to prevent similar tragedies.

But Day said that’s not a realistic solution, given that Canada has about 42,000 kilometres of track and there are 25,000 places in the country where railways meet roadways.

“Grade separation at each one of those is not practical,” he said.

Metrolinx to conduct full investigation into collision

In a statement, Metrolinx expressed condolences to the boy’s family and said the provincial transit agency will conduct a full investigation.

“This is a tragic incident, and our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person who was struck. Our first priority is the safety of the public and our staff. We are thankful to all first responders for their quick and diligent work at the scene,” Metrolinx said.

Listen to this article Estimated 4 minutes The audio version of this article is generated by AI-based technology.…

[194297
49,48,55405
0":"post-547808","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mississauga","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-mississauga
["GET
