Bob Ferguson said he plans to emphasize the state\u2019s willingness to help bring the Seattle SuperSonics back to the NBA when he next meets on Monday with Commissioner Adam Silver, while downplaying concerns that a proposed tax on wealthy residents could hurt the effort.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson said he has not been lobbying other NBA owners ahead of any potential vote to begin an expansion process next week.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED | <a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/seattle-supersonics-nba-expansion-washington-governor-bob-ferguson-to-meet-with-nba-commissioner-adam-silver-again-key-arena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson to meet with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver again <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not made a case to other NBA owners, just to be clear,\u201d Ferguson said. \u201cWhat I just would say is we\u2019re working hard to make sure we have lines of communication, obviously, with the commissioner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson said restoring the Sonics is a priority for him and that he has another conversation with Silver scheduled soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a priority for me to do whatever I can as governor to be helpful in bringing back the Sonics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked what he would tell Silver about the<a href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/washington-legislative-session-wraps-with-millionaires-tax-fight-ahead-olympia-washington-governor-bob-ferguson-k-12-students-legislature-house-senate-annual-income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> proposed \u201cmillionaires tax\u201d <\/a>and concerns it could complicate a Seattle return, Ferguson dismissed the idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost the Sonics to a state that has an income tax, and we did not at the time,\u201d Ferguson said. \u201cSteph Curry pays a lot of money in California, and they have a pretty hefty income tax. So candidly, I just don\u2019t think that\u2019s got anything to do with anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that if Silver raises the issue, \u201cof course, we\u2019ll talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson said his upcoming conversation with Silver would largely be about listening and understanding what role the state could play if the NBA moves toward expansion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be a private conversation, but I plan to do a lot of listening,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it is to happen, there will be a role for the state in some capacity to be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson also framed his interest in the Sonics\u2019 return as personal, describing himself as a longtime fan still shaped by the franchise\u2019s departure from Seattle in 2008, before rattling off the names of players from the 1978-79 NBA championship team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel I have a pretty good appreciation for the loss that our community experienced with losing the Sonics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson said he could not recall who initiated the upcoming meeting, but said he and Silver agreed after their last conversation to remain in contact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SEATTLE \u2014 Washington Gov.
