{"id":54800,"date":"2025-08-08T15:33:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T15:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/54800\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T15:33:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T15:33:13","slug":"childrens-book-illustrator-immigrant-grateful-bathurst-library-welcomed-his-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/54800\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s book illustrator, immigrant grateful Bathurst library welcomed his family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Artist Hatem Aly moved from the Middle East to northern New Brunswick and says the local library has been a huge support in his new home.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aly\u00a0illustrated the children&#8217;s book\u00a0The Proudest Blue, which was read by a\u00a0book club at the\u00a0Grand Manan Public Library\u00a0as part of\u00a0CBC New Brunswick&#8217;s Books and\u00a0Backroads partnership with public libraries.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Readers in six small communities in rural areas of the province took part in book clubs, discovering\u00a0books\u00a0from an array of genres, all with a connection to New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Young readers and their parents read the story\u00a0about two sisters, Asiyah and Faizah. The story is told through the eyes of Faizah, who is proud of her older sister when she wears her hijab for the\u00a0first time at school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aly is a New York Times bestselling illustrator of more than 60 books, including a series that includes\u00a0The Proudest Blue, The Kindest Red and The Boldest White, all\u00a0written by Ibtihaj Muhammad &amp; S.K. (Luke Beirne \/ CBC)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He credits the Bathurst\u00a0Public Library and especially librarian Diane Gauthier as providing the biggest support for him and his famiy in their\u00a0new home.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Diane has been with us since my son was a baby,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We used to go to storytime and once in a while she had to read one of the books that I illustrated to other kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The library is also the best place &#8220;to see the kids&#8217; reactions firsthand,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In\u00a0The Proudest Blue,\u00a0Asiyah&#8217;s hijab\u00a0is blue, and her sister Faizah sees it as beautiful and powerful, like ocean waves, Aly said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A lighthouse on a grassy and rocky cliff jutting out into vibrant blue water.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/grand-manan-lighthouse.jpeg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7455621301775148\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Aly&#8217;s book was discussed by a children&#8217;s book club at the Grand Manan Public Library. (Luke Beirne\/ CBC)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Her enthusiasm, however, isn&#8217;t shared by other students in the story, who make hurtful comments and bully Asiyah for being different.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For Aly, the book is about resilience and family and &#8220;finding a ground to stand on and being together as a family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LISTEN: Young readers reflect on\u00a0richness of all cultures after reading The Proudest Blue:\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Information Morning &#8211; FrederictonBooks &amp; Backroads Pt. 1 on Grand Manan<\/p>\n<p>We set sail for the Grand Manan Library this morning. Saint John host Emily Brass met with some kids, parents and a grandmother to talk about The Proudest Blue. The book by Ibtihaj Muhammed and S.K.
