The Canucks were coming off a strong showing Tuesday in a <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" win=\"\" at=\"\" home=\"\" over=\"\" the=\"\" florida=\"\" panthers=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/vancouver-canucks\/canucks-player-grades-elias-pettersson-bumps-slump-5-2-win-over-panthers\" target=\"_blank\">5-2 win at home over the Florida Panthers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just went through the trade deadline here. We\u2019ve got a young team, and for a lot of guys it was the first time,\u201d Pettersson, 29, continued. \u201cWe\u2019ve said to ourselves that we\u2019ll start building something here. It starts now. We don\u2019t go around waiting. We work hard every day and we have fun working hard every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a big part \u2014 the work effort that we put in day in, day out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pettersson landed with the Canucks a month before last season\u2019s trade deadline, coming over in a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Please try again<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement 3<\/p>\n<p>This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Canucks have started to lean into a rebuild and look to the future, Petterson\u2019s 589 career games have made him an old-guard rearguard here.<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">Pettersson and <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" hronek=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/tag\/filip-hronek\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filip Hronek<\/a>, 27, have been anchoring Vancouver\u2019s blue line contingent of late, alongside the quartet of 23-year-old Victor Mancini, 22-year-old <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" pettersson=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/tag\/elias-pettersson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Pettersson<\/a>, 21-year-old Tom Willander, and 20-year-old Zeev Buium. Those four had a combined 249 games of NHL service as of Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been around great leadership,\u201d Pettersson said of his time with the Penguins. \u201cI just take what I can from that, but try not to overdo anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just trying to be myself. If I work as hard as I can and try to get better every day, I know it\u2019s something the young guys can follow. I want to try to not overdo it and be something that I\u2019m not. I need to show the work ethic and put my best foot forward. Hopefully we can build something from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consistency has been an issue with this Canuck group and that\u2019s not all surprising considering the inexperience. We have to find ways to snap that momentum,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s making a couple of simple plays and keeping the puck in front of us. With our enthusiasm and our skating ability, we bring that we\u2019re going to give ourselves the best chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">The Canucks added Marcus Pettersson and winger Drew O\u2019Connor from the Penguins on Feb. 1, 2025, in exchange for winger Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, forward prospect Melvin Fernstrom and a conditional 2025 first-round draft pick that Vancouver had received the day before from the New York Rangers in the trade that saw centre <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" miller=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/tag\/jt-miller\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J.T. Miller<\/a> head to New York.<\/p>\n<p>That pick wound up being No. 12 overall, and Pittsburgh traded it away on draft day, sending it to the Philadelphia Flyers for picks Nos. 22 and 31. Philadelphia used the selection on centre Jack Nesbitt.
