The summer farmers\u2019 market in Southeast Edmonton\u2019s Ottewell community league won\u2019t return this summer due to construction in the area.<\/p>\n

The annual market which supported about 30 local vendors will not operate for safety reasons while the construction goes on, the organization announced Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a busy little area when you\u2019ve got big trucks and construction happening,\u201d said Corinne Olson, director, Ottewell Farmers\u2019 Market.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just felt that, for the safety concerns of our residents and our community, we wanted to put a pause on it,\u201d Olson added.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes after getting a construction notice from EPCOR to upgrade the stormwater pipelines in the area. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Vendors said even missing it one year could impact their business.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Bob Washington, co-owner of Ruamjai Thai Food, who will be losing his Thursday market day said, \u201cYou lose the farmers\u2019 market, and then people might find another one to go to,\u201d Washington said. \u201cIt\u2019ll be a hard time getting them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an email statement EPCOR said the neighbourhood has a high risk of flooding and that it needs to construct a dry pond to reduce floods and sewer backup during rainfall.<\/p>\n

\u201cEPCOR met with the Ottewell Community League in January to discuss the impacts of this work and mitigate impacts to the community league where possible,\u201d a spokesperson for EPCOR said.<\/p>\n

The impact of pausing operations will be felt beyond just the vendors.<\/p>\n

Funds from the market helped to operate programs and facilities like playschool, basketball courts and ice rinks in Ottewell.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do we generate those funds to keep this going? Because that farmers\u2019 market did subsidize a lot of programs here,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n
