Introduction<\/p>\n

It\u2019s very easy to get lost in the jargon of golf shafts.\u00a0 From all the measurements \u2013 CPM, torque, EI curves \u2013 that have no industry standards, to the construction methods and materials, it can be hard to separate genuine innovations from ad agency hype.<\/p>\n

With the newest shafts from Kinetixx, even a relative layman can understand the excitement.\u00a0 A new material \u2013 Kevlar EXO \u2013 was developed and produced by Kinetixx to be 30% stronger, 30% lighter, and 30% more flexible than standard Kevlar.\u00a0 But can a material we know best for bulletproof vests help make a better golf shaft?\u00a0 I tested the new\u00a0 Kinetixx FlexurX to find out.<\/p>\n

Looks<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Kinetixx FlexurX starts with one of the most unusual colors in the shaft category: \u201cEXO Gold Matte.\u201d\u00a0 This is not your prototypical, Crayola gold.\u00a0 There\u2019s brown and green in it, not to mention a lot of texture.\u00a0 From butt to tip, you can see parallel \u201crings\u201d set at 45 degrees to the direction of the shaft. Kinetixx uses branding that\u2019s as bold as the base color.\u00a0 \u201cKINETIXX FLEXURX\u201d is written in a large, futuristic font across the middle of the shaft.\u00a0 Most of the letters are an iridescent silver, but the second X in each word is red.\u00a0 Additionally, there\u2019s a black and gold \u201cKevlar EXO\u201d callout near the tip.\u00a0 You can hide all of this at address with a logo-down installation.<\/p>\n

Feel<\/p>\n

The feel of the Kinetixx FlexurX was one of the more surprising things I\u2019ve encountered in a long time.\u00a0 Kevlar is best known for its use in bulletproof vests, so the use of Kevlar EXO had me thinking about strength and stability.\u00a0 Kinetixx\u2019s talking points reinforce this with talk of \u201ctighter dispersion.\u201d<\/p>\n

In reality, the FlexurX is one of the most active shafts that I\u2019ve tested in the last year.\u00a0 In my testing notes, I compared it to the Autoflex [review HERE<\/a>] because of the long, smooth, fly rod-like loading and unloading.\u00a0 This shaft feels languid and unhurried from the takeaway to the follow through.\u00a0 I could feel an energetic snap if I kept my tempo very smooth, but I didn\u2019t feel the shaft adding speed when I rushed.<\/p>\n

Ramsey also tested the Kinetixx FlerurX, and his findings largely mirrored my own.\u00a0 He noted that there wasn\u2019t a lot of stability, comparing it to a \u201cmore whippy Ventus Blue.\u201d\u00a0 On the positive side, he noted a \u201cbig kick\u201d at impact, which he liked.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/p>\n

Given the feel of the Kinetixx FlexurX, my expectations for its performance were unambiguous: left and more left.\u00a0 But this shaft surprised me yet again.\u00a0 The Kevlar EXO material provided a lot more stability than I was expecting.\u00a0 I was hitting draws almost exclusive, but they were draws, not hooks.\u00a0 Even more than the curvature, I was surprised by the solid starting line of my drives. The unsurprising benefit of the Kinetixx FlexurX is the ball speed.\u00a0 With this shaft, my swing speed wasn\u2019t as high, but the ball speed stayed up.\u00a0 Ramsey saw similar things in his testing.\u00a0 His smash factors with the FlexurX were higher than with the Kinetixx SyrgeX or with his gamer shaft.<\/p>\n

While the FlexurX did defy my expectations, it\u2019s still a shaft that prefers a smooth tempo and good timing.\u00a0 It felt great when I dialed my aggression way down and let the shaft do the work.\u00a0 Not only did it feel good, the results were excellent.\u00a0 Unfortunately, my natural swing is not that calm.\u00a0 Ramsey agreed, \u201cI had to really focus on a smooth tempo\u2026to not feel like [the club head] was all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning to launch and spin, the Kinetixx FlexurX favors a high ball flight.\u00a0 I saw a consistent mid-high launch, even with my draw.\u00a0 Ramsey felt his launch window was \u201cunpredictable.\u201d\u00a0 What we both saw was high spin.\u00a0 For Ramsey, that meant spin that wouldn\u2019t get below 3,000.\u00a0 For me, the mid to high 2,000s is markedly higher than I normally see.<\/p>\n

The Kinetixx FlexurX is offered in two flexes and two lengths.\u00a0 The FlexurX driver is available in D1 and D2 flexes, recommended for 75-90 and 91-105 MPH driver swings, respectively, with weights of 57 and 60 grams.\u00a0 There are also fairway wood versions of the FlexurX which are 3\u2033 shorter (the driver is 46\u2033) and one gram heavier.\u00a0 The swing speed recommendations are the same: F1 for 75-90 MPH and F2 for 91-105 MPH.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/p>\n

For players that want a super smooth, active feel but need a bit more stability, the Kinetixx FlexurX is a must-try.\u00a0 The addition of the exclusive Kevlar EXO material lets this shaft have a big, flowing kick without the strong left bias that feel normally entails.
