Muskoka, the lake region north of Toronto<\/a>, Canada<\/a>, is affectionately known as Cottage Country. Yes, it\u2019s home to that\u00a0cottage\u2014the one on the shores of Lake Muskoka made famous in the final episode of\u00a0Heated Rivalry\u2019s first season\u2014but it\u2019s been\u00a0a place to relax and unwind for hundreds of years. And for millennia before that, it was home to the Indigenous communities of\u00a0Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabek, M\u00e9tis, and Haudenosaunee.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What you should know about Canada’s Muskoka region<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Muskoka\u2019 came from an Indigenous chief’s name,\u201d explains Wendy Fairburn, general manager at the\u00a0Muskoka Steamships & Discovery\u00a0Centre<\/a>, referring to Mesqua Ukee, a 19th-century Chippawa Tribe Chief. The museum\u2019s exhibitions trace the evolution of Muskoka and its more than 1,600 lakes from its role as a destination for hunters and gatherers to its industrial days, when logging and shipbuilding dominated the region from the 1850s to the 1920s, to the present.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was always kind of a holiday destination,\u201d says Fairburn. \u201cPeople came up from the city for the beautiful lakes, for the pristine air, for the wilderness. So, you would have camps, and then small hotels.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, the hotels are bigger, the cottages more luxe. While many of the 3.2 million people estimated to visit the region each year come from Toronto and elsewhere in Southern Ontario, Americans from Michigan,<\/a> Pennsylvania<\/a>, and New York<\/a> also make the drive up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The size of the cottage you book or the lake you claim as home base is the main draw for this area. \u201cJust get in the lake. Swim, boat, paddle. That\u2019s the heart of it,\u201d says\u00a0Toben Kochman, co-owner of\u00a0The Pearl<\/a>, a market and restaurant open May through October in Bala, one of the region\u2019s small towns.<\/p>\n

Muskoka, a region in Central Ontario, has five main hubs. In the eastern half of the region, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Huntsville are larger towns that have all the basic necessities of what you\u2019ll need for a cottage stay, as well as restaurants, galleries, shops, and movie theatres. In the western half, Bala and Port Carling are located along Highway 169 and have a quieter and more relaxed vibe. \u201cEach little town has its own flavor,\u201d says Fairburn.<\/p>\n

With tranquil fresh-water lakes hidden among pine, maple, and beech forests, and the undulating terrain of the glacier-formed Canadian Shield, this place was made for the\u00a0ultimate Canadian summer vacation<\/a>. \u201cFrom morning hikes to evening concerts, it\u2019s no secret why this beautiful,\u00a0rugged\u00a0landscape is a global favorite,\u201d says Sean Menzie, founder of local news site, The Muskoka Almanac. Best time to visit\u00a0the Muskoka region<\/p>\n

While Muskoka is a year-round destination, it comes alive from May through October, with the peak time for visitors in June and July.<\/p>\n

During spring, birders have their pick of venues to spot woodcocks, warblers, and more, in\u00a0Torrance Barrens Reserve<\/a>,\u00a0Fairy Vista Trail<\/a>, and\u00a0Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park<\/a>. It\u2019s also prime time to enjoy maple season. The hiking trail at\u00a0Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm<\/a>\u00a0leads visitors through the bush, following the system of taps that collect the sap from thousands of trees. The annual\u00a0Muskoka Maple Festival<\/a>\u00a0caps the season with live music, games, and a pancake breakfast.<\/p>\n

In the summer, take advantage of festival season.\u00a0Huntsville Festival of the Arts<\/a>\u00a0offers an eclectic mix of programming, from Just For Laughs comedy shows to talks by environmentalist David Suzuki;\u00a0Tall Pines<\/a>\u00a0turns up the volume for a midsummer weekend with a lineup of indie artists; and\u00a0Muskoka Chautauqua<\/a>\u00a0is a 10-day theatre festival on the shores of Lake Rosseau.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fall is leaf-peeping season. \u201cI love fall,\u201d says Fairburn. \u201cThe colors are great. The temperature is wonderful.\u201d For optimal views, there are\u00a0routes you can drive<\/a>, cruise\u00a0Lake Muskoka<\/a>\u00a0to get a view of fall colors from the water or hike\u00a0Limberlost Forest<\/a>\u00a0for prime vantage points. It\u2019s cranberry season, too, and Muskoka is Ontario\u2019s cranberry capital. Taste the tart fruit in juices, wines, and more at\u00a0Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Paddlers of all skill levels go canoeing on popular routes in Huntsville and Bracebridge, Ontario. The Muskoka River is an easy-access waterway with waterfall views, the Big East River has scenic sand cliffs, and Arrowhead Provincial Park is known for its calm, motor-boat-free waters.<\/p>\n

Stop in at\u00a0Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre<\/a>\u00a0for the history and stay for a cruise on Lake Muskoka, which \u201cgives you a feeling of being back in time,\u201d says Fairburn. The center offers one- to four-hour sightseeing cruises, some of which are themed, such as the fall colors tour that sails each autumn. Dinner cruises are also available\u2014an ideal way to soak in a sunset on the water.\u00a0\u201cThe steamship tours are a must-do,\u201d says Menzie. A sail on the restored Segwun, built in 1887, is a historic antidote to the motorized water vessels buzzing around the lakes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kochman\u2019s team at The Pearl has quickly become a local favorite since he opened it with his sister, Elana, and friend Ryan Feldman in 2023. The market-restaurant sources its ingredients from local farms and producers, and guests can stock up at the market or dine in at the restaurant. Pair the Ontario heirloom tomato and avocado salad with halibut katsu tacos or roasted crispy-skinned trout.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe food scene in Muskoka is up and coming. You\u2019ve got younger, entrepreneurial chefs doing really specific things with food trucks and pop-ups, plus seasonal, locally sourced ingredients are finally getting the spotlight they deserve. There\u2019s a lot of exciting stuff happening right now,\u201d Kochman says. He also recommends barbecue at The Smoking Birds, blueberry doughnuts at Silver Stream Farms, and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich at Ice Dreams Soda Shop. Inspired by \u201850s diners, get a waffle cone stuffed with your favorite flavor from Ontario ice cream maker Kawartha Dairy. Moose Tracks, vanilla ice cream with chocolate peanut butter cups and fudge, is a classic option.<\/p>\n

Pack a picnic for a full day to explore\u00a0Georgian Bay Islands National Park<\/a>, Canada\u2019s smallest national park. Straddling two bioregions, the island park is rich in biodiversity. \u201cBirdlife from raptors to songbirds fly above, small mammals scamper through forest undergrowth, and larger mammals such as fox and bears frequent Beausoleil, the largest of the islands in the park,\u201d says Annique Maheu, acting superintendent of Georgian Bay Islands National Park and Beausoleil Island (Bimadinaagogi) National Historic Site. Parks Canada offers guided hikes through the park, as well as a virtual guided tour on the Parks Canada app that features stories by\u00a0Anishinaabe First Nations\u00a0knowledge holders.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For a high-energy night out, a concert at\u00a0The Kee to Bala<\/a>\u00a0is a must. Kochman calls it \u201ca quintessential Muskoka summer experience.\u201d The venue dates to the 1930s as a concert hall. Today, it\u2019s a stop on the summer tour route for top Canadian bands.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Where to stay<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to stay at a cottage to live the cottage life when visiting Muskoka, but you can book one through\u00a0Airbnb<\/a> or\u00a0local rental agencies<\/a>. Barlochan Cottage, which appeared on\u00a0Heated Rivalry, is available to book through\u00a0Airbnb<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jayne\u2019s Luxury Rentals<\/a>. (Airbnb will release summer dates on June 1, 2026, and will appear on Jayne\u2019s Luxury Rentals starting July 1, 2026.)\u00a0\u00a0Options range from rustic cabins to spectacular mansions. \u201cSome lakes allow full motorized boating, and others have motor restrictions. When renting a cottage, be sure to check the lake rules and regulations to make sure they align with your plans on the water,\u201d advises\u00a0Menzie.<\/p>\n

Several resorts offer access to a lake and all the fun that comes with it. Located at the north end of the region,\u00a0JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa<\/a>\u00a0on Lake Rosseau is known for its spa, two private beaches, and nature trails. Guests can rent bikes on-site to explore the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nearby, on Lake Rosseau,\u00a0Windermere House<\/a>\u00a0is a historic resort dating back to 1870. Guests can rent a boat or book a round of golf at the neighboring Windermere Golf and Country Club.\u00a0\u00a0Deerhurst Resort<\/a>\u00a0in Huntsville or\u00a0Taboo Muskoka<\/a> in Gravenhurst are family-friendly resorts that offer easy access to two of the region\u2019s main towns.<\/p>\n

For campers,\u00a0Georgian Bay Islands National Park<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Arrowhead Provincial Park<\/a>\u00a0offer camping and cabin rentals. While equipped with beds and kitchenettes, you must bring your own bedding, food, dishes, and cutlery for meals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How to get there<\/p>\n

Muskoka is roughly two hours from Toronto by car. It\u2019s a local tradition that every trip includes a stop at Webers, the roadside burger stand on Highway 11 just south of Muskoka.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The regional rail service\u00a0Ontario Northland<\/a>\u00a0relaunches\u00a0The Northlander<\/a>\u00a0late spring or early summer. The train, running four to seven days, a week depending on the season, starts its journey at Toronto\u2019s Union Station, making stops in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Huntsville. Taxi services are available throughout the region\u2014Muskoka Lakes Taxis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0SnapCabs<\/a>\u00a0are good options\u2014but it\u2019s best to book ahead to secure a ride.\u00a0<\/p>\n
