Friday marks the first day of spring in the city, and Calgarians are waking up to fog and mist. <\/p>\n
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow fog advisory for the area. <\/p>\n
It says dense fog with near zero visibility will clear later this morning. <\/p>\n
Traffic will likely be impacted and drivers are asked to turn on their lights, slow down, and maintain a safe distance. <\/p>\n
First day of spring<\/p>\n
As of 8:46 a.m., the season officially flips from winter to spring, also known as the spring equinox or vernal equinox. <\/p>\n
This happens when the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north, according to the Farmers\u2019 Almanac. <\/p>\n
During the March equinox, the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere get roughly equal amounts of sunlight; the Almanac explains this is because neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the sun than the other. <\/p>\n
