{"id":549568,"date":"2026-03-20T18:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T18:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/549568\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T18:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T18:58:10","slug":"ontario-moves-to-ban-above-face-value-ticket-resales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/549568\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario moves to ban above\u2011face\u2011value ticket resales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ontario is moving to outlaw the resale of concert, sports, theatre, and other live\u2011event tickets at prices above their original price \u2014 a sweeping change the government says is aimed at protecting fans from runaway markups and professional scalpers who dominate the secondary market.<\/p>\n<p>The province announced Friday it will introduce amendments to the Ticket Sales Act, 2017, that would make it illegal to resell a ticket for more than the all\u2011in price originally paid, including taxes and service fees. If passed, the rule would apply to anyone reselling a ticket \u2014 from individuals to major resale platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are taking action to help ensure Ontario fans have access to fair resale prices and are not exploited by price gouging,\u201d said Stephen Crawford, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement. \u201cWith these new measures, consumers would no longer need to worry about being ripped off in the ticket resale market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government says the changes are designed to curb the influence of professional resellers who use bots, bulk\u2011buying tactics and automated systems to scoop up tickets and relist them at steep markups \u2014 sometimes hundreds or thousands of dollars above face value.<\/p>\n<p>The province will consult on administrative penalties for violations. Under current rules, ticket businesses can face fines of up to $10,000 for certain offences.<\/p>\n<p>Once the cap comes into effect, it will apply to all resales going forward, regardless of platform.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1041\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/StubHub-edited.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4793205\" style=\"width:1095px;height:auto\"  \/>A photo illustration shows the StubHub logo and webpage displayed on a cell phone and computer monitor on April 17 in Los Angeles.\u00a0(Mario Tama\/Getty Images).<\/p>\n<p>The resale of tickets \u201cisn\u2019t fair\u201d to Ontarians, minister says<\/p>\n<p>Popular, widely used websites like StubHub, Vivid Seats, and SeatGeek provide the infrastructure for high\u2011volume resellers.
