{"id":549994,"date":"2026-03-20T23:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/549994\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T23:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:20:08","slug":"moyes-seeks-clarity-over-premier-leagues-decision-not-to-deduct-points-from-chelsea-everton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/549994\/","title":{"rendered":"Moyes seeks clarity over Premier League\u2019s decision not to deduct points from Chelsea | Everton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">David Moyes has called on the Premier League to provide a fuller explanation of why Chelsea were not deducted points for breaking financial rules under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Everton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2023\/nov\/17\/everton-deducted-10-points-premier-league-guilty-financial-fair-play-breach\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were deducted 10 points<\/a> in November 2023, reduced to six on appeal, plus a further two points later that season for breaches of the Premier League\u2019s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). Nottingham Forest were deducted four points that season for a PSR breach. The Premier League had argued for a 12-point deduction for Everton over the first offence \u2013 a breach of \u00a319.5m over a three-year period \u2013 and an eight point deduction for Forest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Premier League announced on Monday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/mar\/16\/chelsea-fined-suspended-transfer-ban-historical-rule-breaking\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelsea had received a record fine<\/a> of \u00a310.75m, a suspended transfer embargo and a nine-month academy transfer ban for engaging in \u201cdeception and concealment\u201d when making illicit payments totalling \u00a347.5m to sign players during a seven year period under Abramovich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the written reasons for the \u2018Sanction Agreement\u2019, the Premier League stresses that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/chelsea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelsea<\/a> would not have breached PSR rules and frequently commends the club\u2019s new owners, Clearlake Capital, for self-reporting the breaches. A points deduction in this case \u201cwas not appropriate\u201d, according to the agreement signed by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There is anger and dismay at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/everton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Everton<\/a> over the perceived double-standards at play in the Premier League\u2019s disciplinary system. Moyes, who was West Ham manager when Everton broke financial rules and received the points deductions, believes the league has left itself open to criticism with the explanation given for Chelsea\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI don\u2019t think they have explained it well enough in the reasoning what the fine was and why it was,\u201d said the Everton manager, whose side host Chelsea on Saturday. \u201cI think they have to explain exactly what has happened here. If they don\u2019t then we are never going to understand their reasoning why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is me not being anything against Chelsea, absolutely not, I\u2019m just saying that everybody would like to know; Everton supporters, for the pain they had to go through when they had a huge points deduction, and other clubs as well. Those points deductions may well have been correct, I don\u2019t know, but we need to see what is the difference? What would you rather have, a \u00a310m fine or a 10 point deduction? The money you get for your league place now, that might cover it. It would be good if we could get more of an explanation.
