Earlier this week, Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5: an \u201cAI-powered breakthrough\u201d in visual upscaling tech that takes a \u201cgame\u2019s color and motion vectors as input for each frame, then infuses the scene with photoreal lighting and materials.\u201d The internet immediately reacted very poorly<\/a> to its announcement, decrying it as an AI-gen slop filter.<\/p>\n

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected that framing at a live event later in the week, saying everyone is \u201ccompletely wrong<\/a>\u201d and DLSS 5 isn\u2019t actually \u201cpost-processing at the frame level.\u201d That would suggest a finer degree of nuance and control than the alleged \u201cslop filter\u201d that is modifying the final 2D image based on broad internet training data.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But new details from Nvidia\u2019s own \u201cGeForce Evangelist\u201d marketing specialist Jacob Freeman appear to contradict Huang\u2019s framing of the controversial technology. PC gaming hardware YouTuber Daniel Owens<\/a> asked Freeman if DLSS 5 is \u201ceffectively taking a single 2D frame as an input (with motion vectors) to create the output frame?\u201d The Nvidia rep\u2019s response was: \u201cYes, DLSS5 takes a 2D frame plus motion vectors as an input.\u201d They continued, \u201cDLSS 5 is trained end to end to understand complex scene semantics such as characters, hair, fabric, and translucent skin, along with environmental lighting conditions like front-lit, back-lit or overcast \u2013 all by analyzing a single frame.\u201d<\/p>\n

The less technically inclined among you may be asking what the gotcha is here. The issue is that this directly contradicts Jensen Huang\u2019s previous statement on March 17. \u201cIt\u2019s not post-processing, it\u2019s not post-processing at the frame level, it\u2019s generative control at the geometry level,\u201d Huang said to Tom\u2019s Hardware<\/a> during a Q&A. \u201cAll of that is in the control \u2014 direct control \u2014 of the game developer. This is very different than generative AI; it\u2019s content-control generative AI. That\u2019s why we call it neural rendering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Basically, the NVIDIA employee is saying it\u2019s a generative AI filter that uses a single image as a reference, and Huang is saying it\u2019s not using a single frame as the reference; it\u2019s using every aspect of the data, including the 3D geometry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In short, as Owens puts it, DLSS 5 is just using a screenshot and slapping a filter over top. This is why people online, already in backlash mode over the original demo, are now crying foul and accusing Huang of lying<\/a> about DLSS 5\u2019s capabilities in his most recent statement. It wouldn\u2019t be the first time he was accused of misleading consumers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It sounds like DLSS 5 isn\u2019t actually pulling any extra information beyond that. That also kind of explains why some of the lighting effects in the first demonstration look like garbage, because DLSS 5 is just using an image of the lighting and nothing else to generate something new.
