{"id":550764,"date":"2026-03-21T08:08:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T08:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/550764\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T08:08:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T08:08:16","slug":"canada-nato-allies-pull-military-mission-from-iraq-after-iran-attacks-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/550764\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada, NATO allies pull military mission from Iraq after Iran attacks &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian Armed Forces has joined its <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/nato\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO<\/a> allies in withdrawing military personnel from <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/iraq\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq<\/a> amid the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> war, Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>NATO\u2019s top commander, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, confirmed earlier Friday that the alliance has pulled several hundred personnel out of Iraq and relocated them to Europe. They were part of NATO\u2019s security advisory mission established in 2018 to advise Iraqi defence and security officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of this adjustment, the Canadian Armed Forces personnel and Canadian civilians deployed with the NATO Mission Iraq have been relocated to a secure location and are safe and accounted for,\u201d McGuinty said in a statement provided by his office.<\/p>\n<p>Grynkewich said the mission will continue its work from Joint Force Command Naples.<\/p>\n<p>The move came after a string of Iranian attacks on other troops at British, French and Italian bases in Iraq, as Tehran steps up its attacks on neghbouring Gulf Arab states in retaliation over U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that began three weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure have increased after Israel bombed Iran\u2019s massive South Pars offshore natural gas field earlier this week. Kuwait and Bahrain reported new strikes on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Late Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media that his administration was considering \u201cwinding down\u201d military operations in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in his Truth Social post that the U.S. was \u201cgetting very close to meeting our objectives\u201d for the war, including degrading Iran\u2019s military, naval, missile and nuclear capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>However, Reuters and the Associated Press reported Friday that the U.S. was sending 2,500 additional Marines to the Middle East, along with at least one amphibious assault ship. Trump had said this week that the U.S. didn\u2019t need help, while also complaining that other countries did not help.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it \u2014 The United States does not!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn\u2019t be necessary once Iran\u2019s threat is eradicated. Importantly, it will be an easy Military Operation for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier Friday, Trump wrote on social media that NATO allies were \u201cCOWARDS\u201d for previously refusing his calls for help in the Strait, adding the U.S. \u201cwill REMEMBER!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canada on Thursday joined the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11738135\/canada-allies-strait-of-hormuz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saying they were willing to \u201ccontribute to appropriate efforts\u201d<\/a> to ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>The nations did not say what specific action might be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Canada and allies say they could \u2018contribute\u2019 efforts on Strait of Hormuz'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/THU_HORMUZ_OC_VO_THUMB_190326.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0:36<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCanada and allies say they could \u2018contribute\u2019 efforts on Strait of Hormuz\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>McGuinty has left the door open for the Canadian military to help neighbouring countries defend themselves from Iranian attacks, if they seek assistance from the NATO alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11739426\/anita-anand-iran-canada\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand\u2019s office said Friday<\/a> that any potential support from Canada would be guided by local needs, as well as Canada\u2019s laws and policies, and consultations with partners and allies.<\/p>\n<p>Her spokesperson said Canada is still focused on diplomacy to lower tensions, and to stop attacks by all players on energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Armed Forces has had no involvement at all in the current war and no Canadian military members were involved in its planning, the Department of National Defence says.<\/p>\n<p>The department said that, based on numbers from March 5, the Canadian Armed Forces has roughly 200 personnel deployed across the Middle East in six separate operations.<\/p>\n<p>Some military members have been relocated within the region or redeployed back to Canada.
