We are working with our partners to continually review and improve the results.<\/p>\n<p>A new study from the University of British Columbia is raising concerns about the environmental impact of artificial turf fields across Metro Vancouver, which, it says, is leaching a chemical that\u2019s deadly to coho salmon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlehtml\/2026\/em\/d5em01016k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published this month<\/a> in the journal Environmental Science Processes &amp; Impacts, found the fields release a chemical known as 6PPD-quinone into stormwater systems that can eventually make their way into streams and rivers when it rains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers traced the pollution to crumb rubber infill, the small black pellets commonly used in artificial turf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat black rubbery stuff in artificial turf fields is actually ground-up used tires,\u201d said Rachel Scholes, a UBC assistant professor and co-author of the study. \u201cWe thought there was potential that when it rains, those small black particles would leach contaminants into the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists collected samples of the infill from 12 fields across Metro Vancouver, as well as stormwater from the drainage systems of three fields during rainstorms. (Maggie MacPherson\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Because many turf fields include a drainage layer underneath, the water that drains through gets collected into a stormwater pipe, Scholes said.<\/p>\n<p>That water then connects to stormwater infrastructure for the city, or is discharged into surface waters without being treated by a wastewater treatment plant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the largest concern for us,\u201d Scholes said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/stream-watchers-concerned-artificial-turf-field-is-shedding-potentially-hazardous-material-1.6968767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stream watchers<\/a> and environmentalists in B.C. have raised concerns about the chemical because other studies found it is particularly lethal to coho salmon.<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver prioritizing synthetic turfs<\/p>\n<p>The findings come as the City of Vancouver continues to invest in synthetic turf fields to meet growing demand for sports space.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Vancouver Park Board\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.ca\/files\/cov\/van-sport-field-strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">10-year sports field strategy<\/a>, which was approved in June 2024, synthetic turf fields make up a small portion of the city\u2019s total inventory, 12 out of 151 rectangular fields, but account for nearly half of all bookings for such fields.<\/p>\n<p>The report says synthetic turf fields can be used year-round without the same maintenance limits as natural grass, making them better suited for Vancouver\u2019s weather.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH | Stream watchers explain the dangers of artificial turf:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774098790_875_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Vancouver Island volunteers raise the alarm on watershed pollution<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Harries, a volunteer with the Friends of Bower Creek Society, speaks out about pieces of artificial turf and rubber polluting the Bower Creek watershed in Greater Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the city, synthetic fields also recover more than 100 per cent of their costs through revenues while natural turf fields recover only up to to 10 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>But the strategy also acknowledges environmental considerations, including the release of microplastics and the need for a better stormwater management system.<\/p>\n<p>Moloney said those controls are key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re having fields go in without any type of treatment system, that\u2019s where the concern starts to arise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Vancouver Park Board said it no longer uses crumb rubber infill due to concerns about the chemical identified in the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur guidelines solely support the use of inert and non-toxic infill materials such as EPDM rubber,\u201d the board said<\/p>\n<p>How to mitigate the risk?<\/p>\n<p>The salmon-harming chemical isn\u2019t the only one researchers found in the fields.
