A customised sunhat. A slogan sweatshirt. A \u201cmom\u201d necklace. An old copy of Cosmopolitan. If these sound like items found in many homes today, they\u2019re actually the castoffs of a household name: Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next week, nearly 300 pieces owned by Paltrow will be on sale as part of an auction at Julien\u2019s, the Los Angeles auction house that has sold big-ticket items such as Marilyn Monroe\u2019s so-called \u201cnaked\u201d dress<\/a> and the leather jacket worn by Olivia Newton-John in Grease<\/a>. But, while those items went for six-figure prices, Paltrow\u2019s sale is a little more affordable, with estimates starting at about $50 (\u00a337) to $75 (\u00a356) for some of Paltrow\u2019s personalised stationery.<\/p>\n

At the time of writing, a Dolce & Gabbana 2001 T-shirt with the slogan \u201cMaterial Girl\u201d has attracted 16 bids, including one of $800 (\u00a3598). A RED Valentino jumpsuit is already at $600 (\u00a3449). And someone has put a $700 (\u00a3523) bid on Paltrow\u2019s \u201cmom\u201d necklace. A Goop black jumpsuit is currently only on $50, however. And two photos of her ex-husband Chris Martin and his band Coldplay<\/a> have had a bid of $100. More bids are expected in the run-up to the auction on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The auction was prompted by a fire at a storage facility and a house move. Paltrow told Vogue<\/a> she wished she \u201ccould just have a huge garage sale\u201d and some of the items she is selling \u2013 as part of a larger auction entitled Bold Luxury \u2013 aren\u2019t that far from that idea. There are lots of pieces from her brand Goop G Label, glasses frames and costume jewellery.<\/p>\n

Martin Nolan, a co-founder of Julien\u2019s, says it shows \u201ceven a celebrity like Gwyneth Paltrow has their stuff \u2026 It was very important to her that this not appear an elitist type of auction.\u201d As for many, Paltrow\u2019s house move prompted a new pledge against clutter. \u201cHer mantra going forward is: \u2018If I get something new, I\u2019m letting something go,\u2019\u201d Nolan adds.<\/p>\n

Hannah Jackson, a fashion writer at US Vogue, spoke to Paltrow about the auction. She says the more prosaic items go against type: \u201cCulturally, we have a tendency to put celebrities on a pedestal, but that doesn\u2019t exempt them from needing everyday items. Just because she owns sweaters, prescription glasses and coasters doesn\u2019t make her inherently relatable.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are also, of course, items that do speak to the life of an A-lister \u2013 the Atelier Versace gown Paltrow wore to the Country Music Awards in 2010, or a 1999 Christian Dior dress designed by John Galliano. Jackson is particularly taken with the grey Gianni Versace two-piece from 1999, which Paltrow wore to the White House. \u201cNot only is it a gorgeous piece of vintage, she wore it for an exceptional, memorable occasion,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Nolan believes this auction would be a good introduction to those who want to start collecting. \u201cGwyneth is still with us and will be wearing beautiful pieces for many, many years to come,\u201d he argues. \u201cCompare that to someone like Marilyn Monroe<\/a> \u2026 Her stuff goes [for high prices] because there\u2019s a finite amount of items out there.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A customised sunhat.
