{"id":552719,"date":"2026-03-22T06:39:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T06:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/552719\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T06:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T06:39:11","slug":"alcohol-linked-to-rising-colon-cancer-risk-as-disease-becomes-leading-killer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/552719\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol linked to rising colon cancer risk as disease becomes leading killer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2247079467.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-7d0efd03=\"\"\/> article <\/p>\n<p data-v-7d0efd03=\"\">(Photo by Thierry Monasse\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Colorectal cancer is now officially the leading cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cancer-related death<\/a> among men and women 50 and younger, according to research from the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">While some risk factors \u2014 like age, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/genetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">family history and genetics<\/a> \u2014 can\u2019t be controlled, there are some lifestyle behaviors that can increase the chances of the disease.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">One of those is drinking alcohol, which has been linked to an increased risk of at least six different types of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/newly-discovered-virus-could-play-role-colon-cancer-researchers-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">HIDDEN VIRUS INSIDE GUT BACTERIA LINKED TO DOUBLED COLORECTAL CANCER RISK, STUDY FINDS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies alcoholic beverages as a Group 1 carcinogen, which means there is strong, sufficient evidence that it causes cancer in humans.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Dr. Tereza Cristina Sardinha, chief of colon and rectal surgery services at Catholic Health on Long Island, New York, confirmed that alcohol is a well-known risk factor for all cancers, but particularly those of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/digestive-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">gastrointestinal tract<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;The alcohol, or ethanol, will metabolize and break down into acetaldehyde,&#8221; she shared with Fox News Digital. &#8220;This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">metabolism of alcohol<\/a> is very toxic to the DNA of the cell, which over time can lead to the development of cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Alcohol also changes the microbiome of the gut, which is another strong factor in cancer risk, according to Sardinha.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;The microbiome has a significant effect on many pathogens in the colon and rectum, and diet and alcohol definitely affect the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/wild-nature\/bacteria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">types of bacteria<\/a> in your gut.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">When the gut\u2019s &#8220;first line of defense&#8221; is disrupted, it can trigger a series of changes, particularly DNA damage, inflammation and oxidative stress within cells, the doctor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;These processes are closely linked to cancer development, which is why alcohol is considered a carcinogen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/nearly-40-cancers-can-prevented-3-lifestyle-changes-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NEARLY 40% OF CANCERS CAN BE PREVENTED WITH 3 LIFESTYLE CHANGES, STUDY FINDS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The relationship between alcohol and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/cancer\/colon-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">colorectal cancer<\/a> risk is &#8220;dose-dependent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Patients who drink regularly for a long period of time, meaning at least 10 years, will have a lifetime increase in the development of colorectal cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Research shows that for those who drink at least two drinks per day \u2014 which is considered &#8220;moderate consumption,&#8221; the doctor said \u2014 the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer will increase by at least 25%.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">A heavier drinker, consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/deadly-cancer-risk-spikes-certain-level-alcohol-consumption-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more than two drinks<\/a> a day, will have an exponentially greater risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;What really makes the difference is not only the volume but the frequency,&#8221; Sardinha said. &#8220;I just saw one of my patients who I operated on last week, and she drinks six beers a day, and she developed colon cancer. She&#8217;s not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">morbidly obese<\/a>, she&#8217;s not a smoker. The only risk factor she has is alcohol.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The doctor advises her patients to avoid alcohol &#8220;or at least minimize intake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">If someone stops drinking, the risk won\u2019t disappear immediately, the doctor noted.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;It takes about an average of 10 years to know if cancer risk decreased or not,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But we do know that if you continue drinking, your risk will definitely increase.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/mom-no-symptoms-had-stage-4-colorectal-cancer-rare-surgery-saved-her-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MOM WITH NO SYMPTOMS HAD STAGE 4 COLORECTAL CANCER \u2014 AND A RARE SURGERY SAVED HER LIFE<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;That\u2019s why we recommend that patients stop drinking or exponentially decrease their intake in the same way we tell them to exercise and increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fruits and vegetables<\/a> in their diet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Sardinha pointed out that alcohol isn\u2019t the only culprit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Not all heavy drinkers develop cancer, so there has to be some other mechanism that plays a role,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">And not all types of alcohol are equal in terms of colorectal cancer risk, according to Dr. Nathan Goodyear, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">integrative medicine physician<\/a> at Williams Cancer Institute in California.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;The negative impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/drinks\/spirits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spirits (hard liquor)<\/a> is greater than beer, which is more than wine,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">A Danish study also found that wine consumption was associated with a lower risk of death, while beer and spirits were not, Goodyear pointed out. Spirits had the highest risk, especially at three to five drinks per day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;The effects of wine, beer and spirits were independent of each other,&#8221; the doctor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The context in which alcohol is consumed can also play a role, he noted.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;In the U.S., alcohol is often used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\/addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">context of addiction<\/a> \u2014 another hit to keep the high,&#8221; Goodyear said. &#8220;But in some communities, such as Sardina, Italy, and Ikaria, Greece, wine is part of the culture, social connections and community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Wine is taken outside the context of addiction and taken within the context of a plant-based diet, social settings, daily movement, faith, community and life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> Other ways to minimize risk <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">In addition to stopping or limiting alcohol intake, Sardinha shared other healthy lifestyle behaviors that have been shown to decrease the chances of colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">One &#8220;huge and well-established&#8221; factor is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">regular exercise<\/a>, she said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.onelink.me\/xLDS?pid=AppArticleLink&amp;af_dp=foxnewsaf%3A%2F%2F&amp;af_web_dp=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fapps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;If you don&#8217;t exercise, if you don&#8217;t move, you definitely increase your risk of colorectal cancer,&#8221; she told Fox News Digital. &#8220;Even for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, once they have surgery and are able to exercise, that will improve their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">long-term prognosis<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Smoking is another highly carcinogenic habit, and it\u2019s a common myth that it\u2019s only associated with lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Smoking is a risk factor for most cancers, and colorectal cancer is one of them,&#8221; Sardinha said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Taking steps to address and prevent obesity is also a well-established way to minimize risk, as is adopting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">healthy, high-fiber diet<\/a> to promote proper bowel function, according to the doctor.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Diets that are lower in fiber are often more constipating, and, therefore, if there&#8217;s anything in the food that is carcinogenic, that is going to have more direct, prolonged contact with the bowel wall, with the cells, and increases the chances of DNA damage,&#8221;
