Credit: Neuroscience News<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0continued: \u201cAnother blood biomarker, neurofilament light chain, has potentially better diagnostic performance than neuron-specific enolase. We compared neurofilament light chain and neuron-specific enolase\u00a0for the\u00a0prediction of\u00a0long-term cognitive function in survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study\u00a0analysed\u00a0blood samples\u00a0from participants in\u00a0the Blood Pressure and Oxygenation Targets after Cardiac Arrest (BOX) trial\u00a0who had been resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and were comatose on hospital admission.\u00a0Levels of neurofilament light chain and levels of neuron-specific enolase were measured in samples taken 48 hours after cardiac arrest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data on cognitive function, assessed\u00a0by the\u00a0Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score\u00a0months\u00a0after\u00a0the cardiac arrest,\u00a0were available for\u00a0a subset of\u00a0survivors\u00a0who had both neurofilament light chain and neuron-specific enolase measurements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0key finding of the investigation is that\u00a0neurofilament light chain levels\u00a0at 48 hours\u00a0were inversely correlated with MoCA score, i.e. higher blood levels of\u00a0neurofilament\u00a0light\u00a0chain were indicative of worse\u00a0long-term\u00a0cognitive function.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, no association was\u00a0observed\u00a0for\u00a0neuron-specific enolase\u00a0levels at 48 hours and cognitive\u00a0function at follow-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Summing up the findings, Doctor\u00a0Meyer concluded: \u201cNeurofilament light chain\u00a0levels\u00a0measured early after cardiac arrest, while patients were still admitted to hospital,\u00a0were\u00a0related\u00a0to\u00a0long-term cognitive function.
