Max Verstappen\u2019s fascination with the N\u00fcrburgring Nordschleife nearly saw him drive a Formula 1 car at the hallowed venue, until Red Bull intervened and shut it down.The Formula 1 world champion returned to the circuit in GT3 machinery for the latest N\u00fcrburgring Endurance Series round<\/a>, continuing preparations for his N\u00fcrburgring 24 Hours debut in mid-May. But behind the scenes, Verstappen had originally aimed far higher.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, Verstappen confirmed a blocked plan: \u201cThat was not allowed, otherwise I would have done it already.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea was simple on paper but explosive in reality. Verstappen wanted to take a Red Bull Formula 1 car onto the Nordschleife for a demonstration run, a concept that immediately raised red flags internally.<\/p>\n

Speaking to F1-Insider<\/a>, Helmut Marko revealed how he personally shut the plan down before it could progress: \u201cEven years ago, Max was already raving to me about the Nordschleife. Back then, he wanted to do a demo run with a Formula 1 Red Bull. But all my alarm bells started ringing.\u201dFormula 1 dream becomes GT3 reality\"NLS226_032109570602334JM_JM-1025\"\/<\/p>\n

Modern Formula 1 cars are widely considered incompatible with the Nordschleife\u2019s demands. The combination of extreme speeds, violent bumps, and unforgiving narrow sections creates a risk profile far beyond current safety tolerances.<\/p>\n

Marko was convinced Verstappen had no intention of keeping things controlled: \u201cA demo run? No chance. Max had seen that crazy video of Timo Bernhard breaking the lap record with a Le Mans Porsche. I think he wanted to beat that again with the Red Bull.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Red Bull\u2019s senior advisor, the decision was clear and immediate: \u201cThat was too dangerous for me. That is why I put a stop to it and banned it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Verstappen has channelled that ambition into GT3 racing, where he continues to build experience on the Nordschleife. Even then, Marko remains cautious about what might be driving the Dutchman.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily, he can now let loose on the Nordschleife with the Mercedes GT3,\u201d Marko said: \u201cBut I fear he still has Timo Bernhard\u2019s lap record in the back of his mind. He is simply an old school racer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verstappen himself underlined just how much the challenge means to him after his latest outing on the Nordschleife.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, this whole weekend has been about getting to grips with the car on the Nordschleife. Which, yes, it was super enjoyable,\u201d he said: \u201cThe team also prepared the car really well, so we could do some decent testing. They made me feel really comfortable with the car. So yeah, really good experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dutchman made clear the attraction goes far beyond just driving: \u201cThis whole venue is, of course, amazing. Also, to see all the fans and just how passionate they are about racing and the cars here, it is always fantastic to see, and I am happy to be a part of that.<\/p>\n

“For me, this is one of the craziest tracks in the world, in a good way. I have been watching this for a very long time, and it is one of those races that you just want to compete in. And at least finally this year I have the chance to do it.\u201d Verstappen added:\u00a0<\/p>\n

The message is clear. The Nordschleife is not just a side project for Verstappen.
