Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre<\/a> says the Northern Hawk Owl was hit by a car last Thursday, March 12. The driver stopped immediately and brought the injured bird to the centre\u2019s animal hospital, allowing staff to begin treatment without delay.<\/p>\n<\/p>\nSerious injury, immediate care<\/p>\n
An examination revealed the owl suffered a severe open fracture in her left wing, a critical injury for a bird that depends on flight to hunt and survive.<\/p>\n
Staff stabilized the wing using a wrap and began treatment with pain medication, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.<\/p>\n
Wildlife Haven notes the species is not commonly seen in southern Manitoba, making this particular patient even more unique. The owl weighs less than one pound, roughly the size of a large pigeon.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation team says the goal is to return the owl to the wild, but that will depend on how well the wing heals with time and specialized care.<\/p>\n

The case comes just days after another notable animal update from Wildlife Haven, involving a lynx named Lumi.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, Lumi was transferred to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, where she will remain behind the scenes while staff assess her health and long-term needs. The move marked the next stage in her care following rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
