The singer Chappell Roan<\/a> has responded after the former Chelsea footballer Jorginho posted on social media claiming her security guard made his stepdaughter cry when she encountered the singer at a hotel in Brazil.<\/p>\n

The American musician said Jorginho\u2019s stepdaughter \u201cdid not deserve that\u201d, and the situation had \u201cmade her really sad\u201d, adding that the man involved in the incident was not her personal security.<\/p>\n

The Flamengo<\/a> footballer, 34, had posted on Instagram saying his 11-year-old stepdaughter was \u201cextremely shaken and cried a lot\u201d after her security spoke \u201cin an extremely aggressive manner\u201d to her and his wife when they saw Roan at a hotel in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil.<\/p>\n

He accused the singer of not appreciating her fans, saying that they had been staying in the same hotel, and his stepdaughter had spotted Roan walking past their table at breakfast.<\/p>\n

He said his stepdaughter had not approached the singer, but had walked past Roan\u2019s table, and smiled, before walking back to sit with her mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout your fans, you would be nothing,\u201d he wrote, adding that as a footballer in the public eye he understood respect and boundaries, but said \u201cwhat happened was not that\u201d.<\/p>\n

In response, Roan posted a video to Instagram, where she has almost 8 million followers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just going to tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard who is not my personal security,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t even see, I didn\u2019t even see a woman and a child like \u2026 no-one came up to me, no one bothered me, like I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel. I think these people were staying at the hotel as well. So, the fact that, like a security guard, who was \u2013 I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child, I did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did not come up to me. They weren\u2019t doing anything. It\u2019s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn\u2019t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there\u2019s no action even taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

The artist, 28, who was lying down in bed as she recorded the video, continued: \u201cI do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children \u2013 that is crazy. I\u2019m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something, that you would do something, and that \u2026 if you felt uncomfortable, that makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jorginho, who played in the Premier League for Chelsea and Arsenal between 2018 and 2025, before moving to play for Brazil<\/a> S\u00e9rie A club Flamengo, married the Irish singer Catherine Harding last year.<\/p>\n

The couple have one child together, while Harding has a daughter from a previous relationship with the actor Jude Law, and Jorginho has two children from a prior marriage to Natalia Leteri.<\/p>\n

Following Jorginho\u2019s Instagram post, Roan received criticism online, including from the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, who posted on X to say that Roan was not welcome to perform at the city\u2019s annual Todo Mundo no Rio music festival.<\/p>\n

Cavaliere added that he doubted Colombian singer Shakira would treat her fans in the same way.<\/p>\n
