{"id":553761,"date":"2026-03-22T18:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T18:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/553761\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T18:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T18:51:10","slug":"this-is-really-intolerable-astronomers-protest-giant-orbiting-mirror-project-and-spacexs-million-ai-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/553761\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;This is really intolerable&#8217;: Astronomers protest giant orbiting mirror project and SpaceX&#8217;s million AI satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"4e834c35-7549-467b-9c46-a53e3a5fabb1\">Astronomers are up in arms, protesting against a proposed constellation of tens of thousands of orbiting mirrors intended to reflect light onto ground-based solar power plants and SpaceX&#8217;s envisioned one million orbiting data centers.<\/p>\n<p>The projects, which have been put forward to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for approval, would destroy the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/news\/live\/night-sky-what-you-can-see-tonight-march-20-22\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/news\/live\/night-sky-what-you-can-see-tonight-march-20-22\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/news\/live\/night-sky-what-you-can-see-tonight-march-18-2026\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/news\/live\/night-sky-what-you-can-see-tonight-march-20-22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">night sky<\/a> as we know it and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/the-rubin-observatory-will-change-the-game-for-astronomy-if-satellite-companies-dont-get-in-the-way\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/the-rubin-observatory-will-change-the-game-for-astronomy-if-satellite-companies-dont-get-in-the-way\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/the-rubin-observatory-will-change-the-game-for-astronomy-if-satellite-companies-dont-get-in-the-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">obscure the views of astronomical telescopes<\/a> all over the world, hampering scientific progress, according to experts.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"4e834c35-7549-467b-9c46-a53e3a5fabb1-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;This is really intolerable,&#8221; Robert Massey, the deputy executive director at the British Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), told Space.com. &#8220;It&#8217;s absolutely the destruction of a central part of human heritage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c0dd4dbe-22ec-4d9c-a5a0-e2047a12a77f\">RAS, the oldest astronomical society in the world, has joined the growing army of research institutions filing objections to the FCC against the proposals by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> and California-based startup Reflect Orbital.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX announced its plans to launch <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacexs-1-million-orbiting-ai-data-centers-could-ruin-astronomy-scientists-say\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacexs-1-million-orbiting-ai-data-centers-could-ruin-astronomy-scientists-say\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacexs-1-million-orbiting-ai-data-centers-could-ruin-astronomy-scientists-say\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one million data centers <\/a>to space in January. The company&#8217;s founder and CEO, Elon Musk, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1997706687155720229\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1997706687155720229\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on X <\/a>at that time that moving power-hungry computing infrastructure into space is necessary to fully unleash the powers of AI. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/this-companys-plan-to-launch-4-000-massive-space-mirrors-has-scientists-alarmed-from-an-astronomical-perspective-thats-pretty-catastrophic\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/this-companys-plan-to-launch-4-000-massive-space-mirrors-has-scientists-alarmed-from-an-astronomical-perspective-thats-pretty-catastrophic\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/this-companys-plan-to-launch-4-000-massive-space-mirrors-has-scientists-alarmed-from-an-astronomical-perspective-thats-pretty-catastrophic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reflect Orbital<\/a>, founded by former SpaceX intern Ben Nowack, has ambitions to launch 50,000 orbiting mirrors into space, each one about 180 feet (55 meters) wide.<\/p>\n<p>If those plans were to pass, the sky as humankind has known it for millions of years would change beyond recognition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you have a direct view of this, it would be several times as bright as the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a>,&#8221; said Massey. &#8220;That&#8217;s extraordinarily bright.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Even if seen at an angle, the orbiting mirror would be as bright as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a>, the brightest object in the night sky after the moon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imagine a stream of satellites with that kind of magnitude crossing the sky,&#8221; said Massey. &#8220;It would absolutely transform our view of the sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Add to that the million proposed SpaceX data centers, which, although dimmer, would also be visible to the naked eye. Due to the vast size of these planned constellations, there would be thousands of shining dots as bright as stars criss-crossing the firmament at any given moment.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Massey estimates the sky would become up to three times brighter as a result of the vast quantity of Reflect Orbital&#8217;s sun-reflecting mirrors. That brightening would affect the entire planet, including remote locations that are now considered <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-dark-sky-preserves-night-sky-sites-tour.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-dark-sky-preserves-night-sky-sites-tour.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-dark-sky-preserves-night-sky-sites-tour.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark sky sanctuaries<\/a>, where astronomers build their sky-observing machines.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Southern Observatory<\/a> (ESO), an international astronomy research organization that operates some of the world&#8217;s largest telescopes, has also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/european-southern-observatory_eso-astronomy-activity-7439309193527943169-xxML\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAVViqAB4RIpvRFWy09VhT1OWe4LJixLFzM\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/european-southern-observatory_eso-astronomy-activity-7439309193527943169-xxML\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAVViqAB4RIpvRFWy09VhT1OWe4LJixLFzM\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filed objections<\/a> against the two proposals.<\/p>\n<p>ESO astronomer Olivier Hainaut told Space.com that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> in Chile would lose up to 10% of pixels in every image if SpaceX&#8217;s one million orbiting data centers were to materialize.
