The New York Islanders<\/a> are the latest team to voice their displeasure with a goalie interference challenge.<\/p>\n

The call in question came with under eight minutes to play in a critical game between the Islanders and the Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. The Islanders led the game 1-0 and were trying to secure a win to pull even in the standings with the Blue Jackets for the third playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division.<\/p>\n

The play started when a Bo Horvat shot was directed into the slot by Columbus goalie Jet Greaves. Islanders captain Anders Lee<\/a> raced towards the rebound but he was taken out by Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier. Both players slid into Greaves as the puck entered the net.<\/p>\n

Officials on the ice initially indicated it was a goal but the Blue Jackets challenged for goaltender interference and won, taking the goal off the board.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the NHL said “Video review determined that\u00a0New York\u2019s\u00a0Anders Lee\u00a0impaired the ability of\u00a0Jet Greaves\u00a0to play his position in the crease prior to Lee\u2019s goal.” The NHL cited Rule 69.1, which states in part that: \u201cGoals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper\u2019s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.”<\/p>\n

However, the NHL did not mention another segment from Rule 69.1 which says: “If an attacking player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with the goalkeeper, such contact will not be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.”<\/p>\n

It was that omission that frustrated and confused the Islanders after the game.<\/p>\n

“Why was Olivier so mad? Because he knew he pushed Anders in the net and he knew he put the puck himself in the net,” head coach Patrick Roy said. “But hey, goalie interference, if you don\u2019t mind, can we change the subject?”<\/p>\n

The Islanders held on to win the game 1-0.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The New York Islanders are the latest team to voice their displeasure with a goalie interference challenge.
