Mississauga is one of several cities scheduled to host a major international cricket tournament later this year.<\/p>\n

The Over-60s Cricket World Cup 2026 will be played on four pitches over eight dates in Mississauga in addition to locations in Toronto and Vaughan Aug. 9-23.<\/p>\n

The international event, which will feature teams from 13 nations, is being staged by the Council of Canada Masters Cricket. Members of that organization are scheduled to be at Wednesday\u2019s City of Mississauga general committee meeting to address the mayor and councillors, and to unveil the tournament\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n

Senior city staff said in a report on this week\u2019s agenda that the International Masters Cricket group appeared at general committee last May seeking the city\u2019s support related to \u201cinfrastructure amenities and funding opportunities\u201d in hosting the tournament.<\/p>\n

While Mississauga won\u2019t help fund the event, it did make four pitches available for the Cricket World Cup over eight August dates, including two weekend dates, \u201cwhich represents the maximum number of pitches the city can allocate to this event without disrupting regular community use,\u201d staff said in the report.<\/p>\n

Tournament games will be played on pitches at Courtneypark Athletic Fields, Iceland Arena, Max Ward Memorial Park and Paul Coffey Park.<\/p>\n

Staff noted in the report the IMC Over-60s Cricket World Cup 2026 \u201chighlights the ongoing participation, skill and sportsmanship of experienced cricket players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mississauga\u2019s cricket pitches have been popular in recent years with city residents who regularly use the facilities. City staff said in late 2023 two more cricket pitches were being built in response to the sport\u2019s growing popularity here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Aided by the presence of organized groups such as the Mississauga Panthers Cricket Club,\u00a0the popularity of the global sport is at a high point in Mississauga, city officials said earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe popularity of the great game of cricket, helped by clubs like the Panthers, has exploded across Mississauga and the city is helping promote participation in the game through the availability of many quality cricket pitches supporting local clubs for all ages and levels of skill,\u201d a 2023 news release from the city stated. \u201cCricket truly is an international game, which makes it a perfect fit with the residents of Mississauga and is why we continue to promote it.\u201d<\/p>\n
