The adorable juvenile seal, who weighed approximately 500 pounds, did not moult quietly, however, drawing crowds and crossing streets, prompting Fisheries and Oceans Canada to relocate him twice.<\/p>\n
He needed to be moved twice because he swam back down to Victoria from Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island after the first relocation attempt.<\/p>\n
RELATED: Emerson transported out of Greater Victoria for 2nd time<\/a><\/p>\n Now, Vancouver author Ginger Ngo has written a \u201clight-hearted romp\u201d about Emerson\u2019s adventures in B.C.\u2019s capital, highlighting local landmarks in \u201cEmerson The Elephant Seal<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe more I learned about Emerson, I don\u2019t know, the more I fell in love with him,\u201d said Ngo.<\/p>\n Besides being cute and \u201cmajestic,\u201d Ngo says she was inspired to write the story because of the community\u2019s interest in the animal.<\/p>\n \u201cI think there\u2019s always creatures and animals kind of coming into the city and everyone kind of takes photos of them. But whenever I came across people talking about Emerson \u2013 or even news reports\u2026 it feels like people talk about him like he\u2019s a neighbour or part of the community,\u201d said Ngo.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought there was just something really special about that, because he wasn\u2019t just like a random seal that people found,\u201d she said. \u201cThe fact that they call him by his name is also kind of special.\u201d<\/p>\n On Friday, Fisheries and Oceans Canada told CHEK News that there have been no reports of Emerson sightings this year, meaning its unlikely he\u2019ll appear since moulting season is mostly wrapped up.<\/p>\n \u201cHowever, wild animals are unpredictable,\u201d the DFO said.<\/p>\n Fisheries and Oceans Canada adds that Emerson may be larger this year if he\u2019s spotted. Last year, he weighed approximately 500 pounds as a juvenile elephant seal. When male elephant seals are fully mature around five years old, they can weigh more than 4,000 pounds, \u201croughly the size of a bear.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe Department\u2019s hope is that Emerson has matured, gained some \u2018street smarts,’\u201d said DFO.<\/p>\n READ PREVIOUS:<\/p>\n The new children\u2019s book is the first book Ngo has ever written, and is the second time she\u2019s illustrated one.<\/p>\n She hopes that book is an accurate reflection of Victoria as a visitor, an experience she feels she shares with Emerson, as Ngo immigrated to B.C. from the Philippines.<\/p>\n \u201cThe book, I think I wanted to have nods of this community and this place from my point of view, which I think is also Emerson\u2019s,\u201d she said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t grow up in Victoria. There\u2019s something really special about the place from a tourist point of view with the heart of loving Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n Ngo says there\u2019s no plans for a sequel, but that could change if Emerson ever decides to return.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my gosh, I hope he comes back. I guess he\u2019s taking a gap year to find himself,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope he comes back just to visit.
