{"id":557203,"date":"2026-03-24T09:47:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/557203\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T09:47:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:47:38","slug":"police-give-pupdate-on-k9-that-can-find-digital-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/557203\/","title":{"rendered":"Police give &#8216;pupdate&#8217; on K9 that can find digital devices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Piper has grown quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OttawaPolice\/status\/2035066057963315688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">into her role of finding digital devices in search warrants<\/a> for Ottawa police.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.citynews.ca\/2025\/12\/04\/ottawa-police-bring-on-k9-officer-who-can-detect-electronic-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">canine officer joined the force in December 2025<\/a> and has been involved in a number of investigations where not only did she help police find devices, but also comforted victims. <\/p>\n<p>The two-year-old black Labrador has been trained to have a unique ability to help police in child exploitation cases. She has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawapolice.ca\/en\/news\/meet-piper-ottawa-police-service-s-newest-k9-detective.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cmastered\u201d detecting the scent of electronic devices like hard drives<\/a>, USB sticks, SD cards and AirTags.<\/p>\n<p>Since she joined, police said Piper has aided in eight search warrants and found \u201ckey digital devices\u201d in most of the investigations. She has also been part of interviews with child victims, who, according to police, have said they wouldn\u2019t have felt comfortable speaking without Piper.<\/p>\n<p>She is the first of her kind in OPS, but not the first in Canada. That honour goes to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peelpolice.ca\/Modules\/News\/index.aspx?newsId=71b923c1-253e-4809-8e06-923a60ba3896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Harley, a yellow lab who joined Peel Regional Police<\/a>\u00a0in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The K9 officer has been to school visits and events and is helping teach children and guardians about safe digital behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPiper is quickly becoming a well-known and loved member of the community, recognized for both her important work and the comfort she brings,\u201d Ottawa police said in a press release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Piper has grown quickly into her role of finding digital devices in search warrants for Ottawa police.
