The owner’s niece shared how her uncle, Tato, had been cooking for the whole family for years — and how everyone around him kept saying the same thing: “Open your own restaurant.” He finally did, and it’s immediately clear why it was such a unanimous call at the family table.

Montreal North isn’t exactly the neighborhood you instinctively head to for your next culinary discovery. So we’re pretty thrilled when gems like Casa Tato set up shop there. The decor is humble — no Instagram walls, no neon signs, no hanging plants. You walk in and feel like you’ve stepped into a small neighborhood spot somewhere in Mexico. House-made salsas sit in molcajetes on the counter, the atmosphere is warm, and there’s an instant sense of home. In the middle of a Montreal winter, it’s the kind of place that makes you forget it’s minus twenty outside.

The real taste of Mexico
The menu is simple and straight to the point: tacos, burritos, sopes, machetes. You choose your protein — al pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, cecina, pork belly, chicharrón, chorizo, grilled chicken — and let Tato take care of the rest. This is authentic Mexican cooking, no shortcuts, and you can taste it from the very first bite.

Our favorite? The birria tacos. Four tacos with melted cheese, filled with tender meat, cilantro, and onions, served with a lightly spiced beef broth for dipping. It’s comforting, generous, and full of bold flavors — exactly what you want when you walk into a place like this. Another must-order is the machete: a long corn tortilla topped with the meat of your choice, caramelized onions, and peppers. The meats are cooked perfectly, and you leave full without emptying your wallet. The menu also features other delicious options like sopes, huaraches, gringas, tacos, and burritos — all great for sharing.

For those who want to bring Mexico home, Casa Tato also offers family combos: one kilo of meat served with corn tortillas, salsa, limes, onions, and cilantro. Three options are available — carnitas at $55, pork belly at $60, and barbacoa at $65 — more than enough to feed a crowd without overthinking it.

Casa Tato is the kind of address you keep in mind for a quick, comforting lunch, a family dinner when no one feels like cooking, or a casual weeknight when you want to eat well without spending too much. Dishes range from $10 to $20, and the vibe is just as relaxed as the bill.

It’s a true gem in this part of Montreal — and exactly the kind of discovery we love to share.

                    Written by Jean-Philippe Tastet
                                Photography by Alison Slattery

                        Updated on March 24, 2026

Make a suggestion

We first heard about Casa Tato thanks to TikTok.
